[SOLVED] How to power 4 noctua fans outside a PC ?

hi im temporarily using a laptop while im trying to setup a decent desktop and to do some stuff i use a usb to hdd adapter to get access to my old hdd.

today WOW what a surprise i had when i touched the hdd it was so hot that i almost could not stay my hand on it, i m surprised it has not melt into a breakdown! to resolve this i though of use 2 120 mmm noctua fan from my old pc to direct a bit of air on it even if it is not in a case.

I do have a 4 pin to noctua plug but what are the other options ?

for a temporary solution i plugged an old power supply in my multi plug , plugged 2 fan and press power but nothing happens? is this normal since 2 fan are the only stuff plugged in? how to tell it to start working?

You need to short the standby pin to ground, this is how the power button works in on a PC.

Pin 16, usually a green wire. Of course many PSUs use single color wiring, so you have to count. Here are some useful diagrams.

Other methods would just involve something like an old 9 or 12v power brick that you could wire up directly to the fans. Running a whole computer power supply for just two fans is a little inefficient.

Depending how long it's going to be getting your desktop running would be the question you have to answer your self, as to how elaborate and to the cost you want something to be and how soon you want it.

It's to bad Radio Shack closed up most if not all their stores.

Getting a molex to fan plug and a splitter would work but you would have no control over those Noctua's so full speed when that power supply in on.

I made a laptop cooler stand for my asus laptop using parts similar to the links below and have full control over 2 noctua 120mm ippc 3000rpm fans.

Done it by cutting the 2 wire fan plug off the molex plug.
Next wired in to motor control output.
Used 2 cut wires and wired from ac/dc conector plug to motor control input.
Connected fan splitter to the fan plug from output side then connected the fans.
And have full control over the Noctua's.

my nocuta fan have voltage choice so it is not a prob and they are inaudible

i have 2 molex to fan so it is a good start. my priority is making them running to cool de hdd attached via usb. it is not my laptop im trying to cool it is a hdd aside plugged in an adapter that goes in usb .. the hdd gets really hot.

i would prefer to use the loose powersupply to power this cause it is simpler , i dont feel like opening a big project..

eximo do you mean that i could just take a paper clip connect green 16 and a black and it would work?
is this a safe setup (fire wise)?

Thats where cutting the fan plug off the molex and wire it to the output side of this gives you the control of speed.
