How to recouple a P4 compaq branded motherboard that is refusing to startup

i have a P4 compaq desktop and it has bee working for some years now but recently i moved travelled with it and it refused to come on. after which i used an XP OS on it. The system started the format but it dint complete the installation and gives me an error that there is a problem with the memory. how to i repair it because i was thinking of recoupling the motherboard and it is branded. how do i go about it
