How to reduce computing power while downloading

Basically, when I am downloading something, sometimes it is torrent sometimes it is via a third-party downloading client, how do I "power down" the computer? Putting it to sleep will stop the download so that's a no. I am not doing anything else other than downloading, and all other processes other than the download ones can be stopped.

How do I do this?

When downloading your computer is very close to idle, which means it is already drawing minimal power. The monitor actually uses more power than the computer, so I would turn off the monitor. That's pretty much all you can do.
