How to reinstall Wdmaud.drv?

Since running chkdsk on my Windows 2000 system a few weeks ago, I've lost the
Speaker icon that used to appear in the taskbar at the bottom of the desktop.
I tried setting my Sounds and Multimedia Properties (Start > Control Panel >
Sounds and Multimedia Properties), but the Sound Volume at the bottom of the
Sounds tab was grayed out and all the settings on the Audio tab were
unavailable (grayed out with messages like "No Playback Devices" for Sound).

After a little investigation in Device Manager, I found out that the legacy
audio device "Mixer for wdmaud.drv" was unable to load the wdmaud.drv driver.
The error message suggests loading the device driver again. The device driver
does exist on my filesystem, but I don't know how to reload it into Windows,
since it was probably installed with the origianl Windows 2000 installation.
I tried uninstaling and reinstalling SP4, but that had no effect. Does anyone
have any idea how to get Windows to recognize this device driver again?

Thanks,

Go back to Device Manager and remove all the sound entries, before doing
this make sure you have the drivers
they may be needed, reboot and let windows reinstall them.
