How to run a program without installing?

I am a game lover. I have bought a game dvd from local game parlour. The game is stored in the dvd neednot to install on pc. The shop owner said that i have to copy the whole contents from dvd to pc drive. And click on game shortcut to play. But i cannot understand how it is possible to play games without installing on my pc. Please solve this problem of me. Can i also do that with other software

Some older games could be played by just copying the files - it's unlikely any recent big name title would allow that given the more complex setup most games need now, but some indie titles still do allow this install method.

Some "installers" don't do anything except create folders, copy (or unzip and copy) files and create shortcuts - so you don't really need need an installer. Others register new assemblies/DLLs or install new drivers or copy files to multiple locations around the drive or install frameworks (DirectX, .NET, etc). All an installer really is a is a singular executable that triggers one or more other events.
