[SOLVED] How to setup a dual monitor?

Hi all,

I have a Dell e7470 laptop which has one HDMI port, bought two ViewSonic monitors: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00EZSUVHK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1
I would like to setup a dual monitor and be able to display different things on them at the same time. Can you please let me know how I can do that? Every splitter I found reads they don't extend the monitor, not sure how to do that.

If you only have a single output (that isn't DisplayPort or Thunderbolt), then you're limited to one 'output', ie one additional display.

However, if this is the laptop you have - you also have mini-DisplayPort.

If that's correct, then you can take mDP to HDMI:

Thank you for reply. Yes, my laptop has only one HDMI output, that laptop you have listed is exactly what I have. I'll go ahead and buy the mDP to HDMI cable then. To get it setup, I should connect monitor #1's hdmi output to the laptop hdmi, then connect monitor #2's hdmi output to mDP using that cable, did I understand it correctly? will I be able to display two different things on them?

Yes, there will be two independent displays.

As far as which will be priority #1 and #2, I'm not sure - but you'll know right away once you connect both and power it up.

I just unboxed the TV and the cable you recommended, plugged them and without any setting changes it worked like a charm! Thank you so very much for your help
