I have a Dell Optiplex 980 desktop. It has an add-on video card that supports two monitors, which I currently have set up correctly (the integrated video card is disabled).

I am wondering if I can set up a third monitor on a second add-on video card? Or do I need to switch to a video that supports all three (or more?) on one card?

Barring that, I need to be able to see the same thing on two monitors (in a teaching/training environment), similar to the way a laptop can be used with an external monitor.

hm... sorry couldnt get the question... you want to have three extended displays or two extended and one duplicated or everything duplicated?
you will def have to add a second video card or upgrade to a new one... currently only amd's graphic cards can support up to three extended monitors so you may want to get that...
and just duplicating everything... not sure if you can do that with a nvidia card.. but id got with a amd card anyways just in case... there are a lot of cheap options for that...
a hd5570 should suffice your needs
