I dont see much of a need for WinXP on my Win7 machine because its accepted every application Ive thrown at it. Ive never encountered any compatibility issues in my Win7 machine. So far Ive been playing the very old Fallout1 and Quake 3 on it, and a few other apps. Better to save space.

What are some of the top apps that users would even want this for?

In other words, why should I even want XP mode? I know it to be a limited bundled MS VPC, and would have better results using VMWare or even Microsofts own Virtual PC product, with something like xp performance edition or even tiny xp.

I use XP and haven't upgraded to Win7, as not worth the cost and hassle. Sure, if you buy a new PC, there is no choice.

Stick with existing OS until you get a new PC.

What you have to realize, is that many people, especially on this forum, build their own computers. We don't simply accept what came on the PC, or purchase an OEM PC to get an OS upgrade.

I have installed all three files but I still don't have the folder \windows xp mode\ or any of its files. I did search for it. The file exists in the start menu, but the target is is system32.

Any help?

Excellent article. Thanks. I have several clients who will find this information valuable.

For you dorks who post to say you don't need this feature, what's the point of that? You just waste time and muck up the page for people who DO need it. I don't need tampons, but I don't go to the kotex forum and post that I don't need them.

For those looking to run games / hardware: XP Mode was never intended to do that... MS stated it right up front. If you have an old piece of hardware that doesn't have Windows 7 drivers, it won't magically function under XP Mode. The only reason for XP Mode's existance is to enable business users running older software that may not be compatible with Win 7 to use that software in XP Mode.

Did you honestly expect MS to give you this license for free in the box without any restrictions at all? It would have been like putting a free copy Windows XP Pro in every Windows 7 Pro/Ultimate/Enterprise box. MS isn't in the business of giving away 2 OSes for the price of one.

I'm going to install it anyways...working in Tech Support I found that even if i don't use something its always wise to have a foundation for it because I never know when or what kind of question I'll get. And to the first guy he's going to find that XP is going to become more hassle than switching to 7. Vista was hassle not 7!

This setup did not work for me, i kept getting an error. I had xp pro on a disc though and used VM Virtual Box, now my top producer 6i is working great. Running XP in 7, who would have thought it - at least I'm not running Vista.

I followed the steps. However Windows XP Mode shows Powered down Machine status, and when clicked on it, it shows "unable to write to one of its virtual hard disks". What could be wrong?

I thought this would be useful as I use a lot of specialist programs that will not run in compatability mode, but carefully followed the instructions and it will not run;

Wheb I try to run it, Windows XP Mode shows "Powered down Machine status", and when clicked on it, it shows "unable to write to one of its virtual hard disks".

Any advice before I bin this, please?

I tried to do this several times and I can't get around the notice that this is not applicable to my computer. Didn't matter which of the 2 choices I tried for OS. So much for that trick! I need to use xp mode for cameras I got that won't install on 7. CRAP!!!

I downloaded the XP mode, but it doesn't show up as a .vhd file, it only shows up as a .exe file. Did I do something wrong?
