Nice overview. I actually use LibreOffice and it seems the methods for tasks like this in Google Sheets is easier and more intuitive thank in LibreOffice Calc, which behaves more like Excel. Going to start using Google Docs more and see if it's a better fit for me than LibreOffice.

In Excel:
Select a cell
Drag down and to the right to select whatever x-y cells you want.
Insert, Table....
poof...alternating colors, with other added benefits of being a 'table'.

Not sure why a tutorial for this is needed.

Just create a table and click banded columns/banded rows in "format table"
