how to solve the RED X problem in volume icon in the task bar?

my audio drivers were corrupt so i uninstalled it from the device manager. now even after reinstalling the correct audio drivers (Realtek HD audio driver) my volume icon still has the red x notification. restarting the computer also does not solve the problem. what do i do?

If you are using USB speakers or headphones have you tried disabling everything except the speakers/headphones? That was the only way I could get my headphones to work after one of the updates.

i use only headphones with 3.5mm headphone jack
