I recently bought a Samsung 750 EVO ssd with a capacity of 250 gigabytes. I was wondering if there was a way to switch my operating system over to the ssd so I could boot directly from the ssd instead of the hard drive I already have in my computer. All of the other ssd guides I found were based on either building a system with an ssd or keeping the operating system on the hard drive. Thanks!

OK, you're close, but not close enough.

You have to get that actual used...

How much total used space is on your current C drive or partition?
How much of that is Doc/Pic/Music/funny cat vids?

I have used about 250 Gigabytes out of a one terabyte hard drive. The majority of that is steam games with a few cat videos sprinkled in.

OK, you're close, but not close enough.

You have to get that actual used space to below 200GB for a clone operation.
You can't move only the OS. The Samsung Data Migration allows you to leave off things like vid and mp3. Other than that, everything goes.

Once you get that used space to below 200GB, these steps
------------------------------------
Download and install Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Power off
Disconnect ALL drives except the current C and the new SSD
Power up
Run the Macrium Reflect (or Samsung Data Migration)
Select ALL the partitions on the existing C drive
Click the 'Clone' button
Wait until it is done
When it finishes, power off
Disconnect ALL drives except for the new SSD
Swap the SATA cables around so that the new drive is connected to the same SATA port as the old drive
Power up, and verify the BIOS boot order
If good, continue the power up

It should boot from the new drive, just as like the old drive.
Maybe reboot a time or two, just to make sure.

If it works, and it should, all is good.

Later, reconnect the old drive and wipe as necessary.
------------------------------

This works.

Just to be clear, I would Clone my hard drive to my ssd, have my computer boot to the ssd, then use the hard drive as a storage drive? Would I need to wipe the hard drive or could I keep all the files on it. Thanks!!
