I put together my second full build (though I did a lot of replacements on my last that it may as well have been like three or four through its lifespan) a couple months ago and my knowledge of hardware is still fairly limited. Sort of a somewhat budget build intended for gaming, it all went along just swimmingly, and seemed to run fine for a while until I actually got around to gaming.
I immediately started having issues with bluescreens apparently related to cpu overheating. The bluescreen usually flashes by too fast or not at all, always says cpu heat, get the screen about cpu being too hot on restart sometimes after too, and that burnish electronic smell. It seems to run at about 65 c under load now, 70 c initially though, everything else is cool as it should be. Really easily overheats, it didn't seem to matter much what I was doing, though I found just limiting most things to 30 fps got the problem to go away and it went out of my head for a while until I've been playing some newer things it doesn't get along with well with. Video card runs great on stuff, though... not that it matters when my processor says no.
I have tried a few things that seem to have improved it a bit, though not much. I installed two additional case fans and swapped out the stock cpu cooler for a different one (sort of cheap one, though) and used some arctic silver on that. Tried sitting here with a floor fan blasting on the case/feet once and it didn't help at all. It's not located in the most ideal of places for cooling but has no other place to go, everything else is cool enough in there and the airflow seems pretty solid I guess?
The CPU I got is Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4 GHz at the suggestion of a friend who also has no idea how to help my problem. Whole build was set up with input from various friends with a small bit of experience. Win7 64, 8 gb ram, 700w psu, ASUS Z87-PRO, GeForce GTX 760, uh not sure what else might help if needed?
I don't have anything to swap out to test as my last setup was a complete loss and any other spare parts I own are too old. The CPU being the issue is just my best guess after a few months of this, since the apparent overheating seems to only be on its end, which is why I figured the CPU subforum was the best choice?
I've never asked advice on a forum before since I usually figure stuff out myself after a lot of frustration or harassing different friends but this is just beyond me and anyone I know well enough to ask for free. My next options are taking it in to have someone check it out or seeing if i can exchange the cpu somehow without being sure and I'd just kind of like to at least figure out if it's even what I think it is.
Dead lost, basically, anything at all that could be offered is an absolute godsend.
