how to turn off directional sound while gaming?

when i play games like skyrim and the npc's are talking i can not hear them unless i diractly look at them and if i stand while there behind me i will not be able to hear them there will just be this echo when there talking kinda weird

how do i turn this off i have no idea what to do its getting pretty annoying

Are you using a headset?

are you using a 5.1 speaker system?

Try checking your playback device properties: (right click the speaker icon in your taskbar)

Does your 5.1 system have any software, it'd be your sound card's drivers likely, like Realtek Audio Manager or Soundblaster, ect.

There should be some settings for 3d/surround sound. Or you may have to turn up the audio for your rear speakers there.
