My Macbook Air has somehow found a way to write protect the hard disk so that I can't write anything onto it. The computer won't let me access the relevant Wiki.Answers page so I'd appreciate it if someone could spell out the answer here. Thanks in advance.

This is a permission set up on your Mac. To turn off write protect (which only allows users to read the documents), first hold the command key (apple key), and then hold the i key (at the same time). Let both keys go.
Now, hit the gray arrow at the very bottom of that info box. From there, change the permissions to any setting you want that isn't on read only. You must have the Admin password to do this.

Right click/ctrl+click the HD icon and click "Get Info" You can also select the HD icon and press command+i. At the very bottom of the window that comes up there are read/write permissions. Click the lock in the corner to make changes to them that fit your needs :)

(Notes: You need the Admin password for this. This works for me on OSX v10.9.2; not 100% sure if it works on older OSX versions.)

If you can't find the HD icon, enter the name of the HD in Spotlight search. By default mine is called "Untitled."

Good Luck!

Hi, your solution below worked well on my 2012 MacBook Pro - thank you so much!
