Is there a way to uninstall XP Pro on an older PC and reinstall the software
on a new PC. I have the product key from the original installation.

Assuming a retail license (OEM licenses are not legitimately
transferable), simply remove WinXP from the computer it is currently on
and then install it on the new computer. If it's been more than 120
days since you last activated that specific Product Key, the you'll most
likely be able to activate via the Internet without problem. If it's
been less, you might have to make a 5 minute phone call.

Here are the facts pertaining to activation:

The normal way to "uninstall" any operating system is to format
the hard drive and install a new OS of your choice.

Only if you performed an upgrade from Win98/Me, elected to backup
the old system files, and didn't convert the partition to NTFS, can
you then boot into Safe Mode and click Start > Control Panel
> Add/Remove Programs. All of these conditions must be met for the
uninstall option to be available.

To install, simply boot from the WinXP installation CD. You'll be
offered the opportunity to delete, create, and format partitions as part
of the installation process. (You may need to re-arrange the order of
boot devices in the PC's BIOS to boot from the CD.)

Bruce - When I installed XP, I upgraded the PC from Windows 2000. It has
been about 2 years. I am not certain if I saved the original configuration.
If I uninstall with your instructions, there won't be any operating system
on the PC at all. Right?

Yes, I have the original retail license disc.

Correct. There is no rollback to Win2K. In your specific case, the
*only* way to "uninstall" WinXP would be to format the hard drive, which
would leave no OS on the computer. Of course, there's nothing the
prevents you from re-installing Win2K, if you like.
