Replace your RAM with a set off 2x8GB compatible RAM.

Too little information to give any advice on this.

Your laptop - probably purchased 2015 or '16 is quite old, so this begs the question:
What do you use your laptop for (games, school, work, only web based tasks) ?

Do you intend to keep the laptop or buy a new one ?

Also - the generic notion "laptop performance going down" suggest old windows installation and possible the ssd is low on free space. Are you able to re-install OS ?

Chances are pretty high that you would be able to find a decent refurb that was much newer and on Windows 11 in the neighborhood of $150-200 (give for inflation). I commonly look for refurbed business type laptops on Newegg and if you are comfortable with B grade they would be closer to the lower estimate on price.

Unless you can find some used RAM (and maybe an SSD on the cheap) I wouldn't spend towards doing anything to the current model.
