I've recently build a computer and i felt that the multitasking and alt tabbing was quite slow, which made me suspect that i was only using my cpu's cores to its full potential. How do i check the amount of cores i'm using and how do i set the amount higher? Also what drivers do i update after building a new pc? help would be much appreciated thanks!

Solution
try this
right click start button
choose power options
set PC to high performance.

this sets CPU to 100% speed all time, it can't go much faster than this without overclocking it.
You should go to your motherboard makers web site and download the latest chipset and other drivers for your model. Check them against the drivers in device manager before installing them. Windows may have loaded a pack for you already but they often not the newest. Also helps to check graphics card and USB device drivers as well.

When i try installing the latest chipset for my ASUS Z170 Pro gaming motherboard, i get an error saying "fatal error during installation", also how do i check the amount of core im using for my cpu?

Are you running AI Suite? I think latest version will update drivers for you - its on a tab.

If you running win 10, right click task bar
choose task manager
show more details
open performance tab
click CPU
right click the graph and choose change graph to
logical processors

this will show all your processors in small graphs. I only have 4 and most of time 2 of them aren't doing anything. But then PC isn't doing anything either and idling at .77ghz

On your motherboard install DVD you may have Asus CPU Z, it is a Asus labelled version of CPU Z which will show you more info about CPU. But then you need a DVD drive to use that.. i forget not everyone gets those these days. Seems an oversight on behalf of Motherboard makers, they need to release drivers on USB instead.

When i change the graph to logical processors, it shows 8 different graphs, does this mean im using cpu to the max? Ive read online that going to msconfig and adjusting the number of processors in the boot menu from 1 to 8 cores, does that help increase the speed of the cpu? Thanks for the help!

if it shows 8 it just means windows can use all 8 if it needs to.

changing the msconfig thing just means windows uses all 8 at boot up to speed up start. I would leave it at 1 as starting too fast doesn't help programs load any faster, it just means windows might. Still has to wait for storage to catch up. It doesn't increase speed of CPU.

What should i do to maximize my computers multitasking and loading such as alt tab speed and loading up games?
My specs:
ASUS strix 1070

ASUS Z170 Pro gaming
Corsair vegence 8gb 2400 mhz
