how to use graphics card as primary

hi .im having some trouble trying to understand how the video card works.I know once you insert a graphics card in the motherboard then the onboard graphics are disabled then u need to use the graphics card inputs.I have a msi b250m i3 7100 corsair vengeance lpx 16g msi rx470 armor oc and a 600 w psu. here's my question.do I need to use a dvi adapter? coz I tried using the hdmi didn't work at all.nothing was changed in the bios what im basically Saying in a summary I built my pc finished it so do I just plug in the dvi adapter hook it up and go or what else need to be done please shed some light(literally)

If your monitor has HDMI input and GPU has HDMI output, using HDMI cable should work fine. If it does not, you probably made some kind of error in connecting components.

ok I checked the gpu only has one power connector intop and the fans are running but I still can't get the display from it.

is therex a possibility that I need to install drivers for the card to work

No, windows has basic drivers to let the card display basic 2d graphics.
Go into the BIOS and make sure the PCIE is set as the primary display device.

ok still nothing
