how to use quake 3 benchmark?

dear all,

i'm a newbie in computer and interested in benchmarking computer. may i know step-by-step how to benchmark in quake 3 arena? i know that in tom's website has stated command line like this:

Quake III Arena Retail Version 1.16
command line = +set cd_nocd 1 +set s_initsound 0
Graphics detail set to 'Normal'
Benchmark using 'Q3DEMO1'

but, where should i type this command? fyi, i've never played the game before.
and last, is q3 arena and quake 3 the same game? or it's just an expansion pack or something?

You press on the Thildle key "~" and the console will drop down. If i remember this is done from the main menu page but not sure. Try it. When you select your arena the FPS will show on the top, or is it bottom.
Yes Q3A and Quake3 are the same.

does the command give us the average fps at the end of the benchmark?

The demo will run through as fast as it can and report your average fps in the console once finished

do i have to also type :
+set cd_nocd 1 +set s_initsound 0

before type timedemo 1?
and also do i have to type ~ again in order to close the console before go to demo section?
