So, I am getting a Dc7900 Mini Tower, its a HP with a
intel core 2 duo 3.ghz
PSU is a 365w OEM

Now, I wish that I could simple buy a ATX Psu, slap it in and be done. But last time I tried, It failed with my Dc7700 SFF computer im using currently. I bought a external PSU and hooked it up, unknowing the HP motherboard with intel chipset had its own special psu that made it so the mainboard powersupply was also the CPU powersupply , as its a older model

So I wish to find out if the DC7900 is upgradable to a standard ATX format or if I'd have to go get a special HP psu upgrade such as
http://www.atxpowersupplies.com/630-watt-power-supply.htm?psu=630WPS-462434-001

The reason for wanting the upgrade is to put in the Radeon HD7750 which is a low profile card that draws very little watts only 55 max and I am unsure if my psu can handle it. I have heard tales of people with 250 and 300 running it but I don't want to risk it if the psu upgrade is simple.

One like that only requires 400 watts. So I was wondering if anyone has successfully upgrade the psu not just opinons without knowing about this exact computer. Or if someone is runing a HD7750 GPU on the orginal PSU with this system.

I'm in the process of learning upgrade options for my HP dc7900 convertible mini tower myself. With that said, I upgraded the PSU to a 500w cooler master extreme to pair up with a radeon hd6770 last year. Just this month, I replaced the psu with a xfx 550w bronze plus (was on sale) and upgraded to a MSI gtx 760 itx GPU. I'm currently over clocking this GPU and it runs wonderfully.

So to answer your question, whatever PSU you buy should work fine for your dc7900.

Yes, you can install any standard ATX PSU (with 24-pin ATX connector) in the HP dc7900 -- below is a link to support this conclusion:

the dc7900 convertible minitower I'm having to deal with now won't take most atx psu's its got a cut-out for the power cord that's not in a standard place or orientation, nor is there a power switch so I'd be careful about saying any will fit it.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about, not pretty but, you'll get the idea..

Your picture demonstrates that there is a non-standard power-cord cutout in the dc-7900 case -- but maybe it's still not that difficult to custom-fit a ATX PSU into the dc-7900 case?

Have you tried removing the stock PSU, and then trial-fitting a standard ATX PSU just to see...

1) . if there is sufficient space inside the case to allow the new PSU to slide fully into the interior of the case

2) . if the mounting holes line-up, or do not line-up, and

3) . what new holes or cutouts might have to be created in the back or sides of the case, in order:
a) . to securely attach the new PSU with mounting screws
b) . to have full-access to the power-receptacle . and
c) . to have full-access to the on/off switch of the new PSU?

Yeah, I did try some and none fit. So, I'm now trying to find one to get shipped thats better than the original .. that will fit. Dimensions are close to some of the others but that power tap placement is crucial and I've never had to make cuts on a case to get a power supply in .. well, not in 30 years anyway, the metal there is not made to be modified neatly or easily. Original psu is 6 x 3 7/8 x 6 1/8 or metric; 150mm x 155 x 99 (as close as I can measure it). I may just go with the hp original for now since this could be more involved than I have time for at the moment.
Note :: If it were my pc, I might take more .. or less aesthetic chances but, its not my machine that needs it.
