Nobody wants Windows 8. It is not a secret anymore. MS can't get to windows 9 fast enough now.
Actually from what I have seen, a lot of IT professionals like 8 and 8.1 as do a lot of gamers. I like 8.1. I think its a great OS and since I never used the Start menu anyways it doesn't change anything for me.The thing is, Microsoft is playing it smart. They are going to be unifying their OS across all platforms which means you can use a live login and access everything from any device you are logged into. I will also mean one experience across all devices simplifying the learning curve, unlike Apple which is different on Mac OS vs iOS.In reality Microsoft is going to be in a better position than Google or Apple when tablets and phones start running full OSes instead of the watered down crap people call an OS.
What's really interesting is that I know someone that bought a PC with Win8 on it a couple of weeks ago. He only figured out today that it was a touchscreen, and that happened to be while running Linux. Win8 touch optimized? Apparently not!
No that is called a clueless customer. That's the majority of people who buy products. They almost never do research and believe what they hear rather than what they experience.Does anyone remember the Mojave Experiment Microsoft ran? The one where they took people who never used Vista but said it was horrible? The one where the majority actually like Vista?Consumers are clueless. As for HP selling 7, I like 7. It is a great OS. but this is just going to be XP all over again. People will hang on and hold back progress in the name of familiarity.

I don't understand why everyone hates Windows 8 so much. When I built my Windows gaming computer last year, I chose Windows 7 because of the mixed reviews of 8 and I worried about game compatibility. I recently helped a friend build his computer and I set it up with him. We installed Windows 8 and we installed the classic shell. It was a lot faster than Windows 7(partly because it was a new hard drive and it didn't have any files to clunk up the computer). We both really liked the interface and thought that it was clean and easy to navigate. I'm not saying I hate 7, I really like it, but I think that I would like 8 better.

Because a lot of the comments are from Linux fanboys who are looking for reasons to be dissatisfied. While it is clear that Windows 8 could have been more polished and really should have had better instructions and discoverability, I think the hate is irrational. But if you are in bad faith to start with, then conversation and reasoning is useless.

Although I hated Windows 8 when I first tried it during the preview program, after working with it for a while I got the hang of it. I believe that sort of introduction was way too common and I lay responsibility at the foot of Microsoft. That said I find Windows 8 and 8.1 to be fine and a step forward from Windows 7. While I do not use many Metro/Modern UI applications, I like having the possibility and I like having the Live Tiles up when I am away from the computer. When I am working at the computer it is desktop 98% of the time.

The real reason is Windows 8 made working with a PC that much harder. It is poorly designed and many users found this new OS irritating and frustrating to use. No wonder that new PC buyers now want Windows 7 instead of the abysmal Windows 8 and 8.1.It is amazing that Microsoft is so stupid, stubborn and completely out of touch with their users that they did not get the clear message when they released the beta version of Windows 8. Users hated it.They better fix all the short comings with Windows 9, otherwise they are going to force many Windows users to seek other operating systems, like Linux.

I had to pick and chose W8. In an odd story, I bought a laptop in Mainland China... I know right? Anyway the copy of W7 on it wasn't valid. Big shock eh? I had to buy a new OS and picked W8.1 just to see it. So far I don't mind it. It does have the metro screen which seems useless. But once I click to desktop things are pretty normal again. Overall it boots faster than W7 and it does some other things better. I can click to desktop faster than W7 loaded or faster than W7-W8 if that makes sense.... MS should let people turn Metro off as it is useless, but I can live with W8.

I'm waiting on high performance desktop based android systems right now both hardware and software side a little behind where they could be, but if they did something more like the traditional x86 desktop system for ARM and Android I'd be all for that transition.

The formal announcements by HP are simply a publicity stunt. If you have been shopping for OEM PCs recently, you know that many vendors quietly offer Windows 7 on select models, specially on some "enterprise" type desktops and PCs. Dell has several models but they don't advertize them. In any case, more choice is always good.

i'm far from the first to recommend it, but i just had 8 installed on a touchscreen laptop and my boss requested I install 7 on it. i installed classic shell (with boot to desktop) and he was satisfied...people just want more familiar.i was fine when i tested 8 out on a desktop, but mostly because i use keyboard shortcuts and desktop "apps." atl-tab doesn't work to switch between win 8 ui and desktop apps...that was my biggest complaint. seemingly, the reason is that the desktop is treated as an app. stay on the desktop (or in win 8 ui) and you are good.

All these downvotes from bads who probably shouldn't even be on this site. If you don't know how to use Windows 8 or ClassicShell, then you probably shouldn't be allowed to own a computer. The OS is better. It is faster. Yes, metro blows, but use a workaround, and the OS is just flat out better.

I have both Win7 desktop and laptop(s) , and Win 8 desktop and AIO ,I know will get downvoted hard for this ,but honestly I can do stuf on Win 8.1 much faster than on Win 7 ,even after only few days of use ,I feel so familiar with Win8 ,not gonna lie I was a bit sceptical ,but I built a new PC and I had Win8 Pro upgrade that i grabed for 49 $ during the sail period ,I decided to take give it a try ,and for my astonishment ,I liked it ,honestly ,I had some driver problems in Win7 with my logitech prepherials and with my home network ,they are all gone ,security is not a matter anymore ,as Windefender is always working in the background without annoyance ,and I didnt miss the start menue ,Ive been using Win since 3.1 ,and yes ,I didn't miss it ,in fact I feel that Win8 is cleaner and more user friendly than win7 ,yes I can't care less about metro apps (hardly use any ) ,but I think it is cause I use Win 8 for desktop, with a tablet I think it would be great n easy way to gey your job done!all in all ,Win8 ( when I say 8 I always mean 8.1 ,cause Ididnt have the time to test the 8 ,I upgraded to 8.1 right after installing it) is a great OS ,and I really can't understand why people hate it!

Even after having lots of smarty pants no-it-alls tell me over and over again how Win 8 is so wonderful that I must be stupid to not like it, and after spending 6 weeks stuck in a motel with a Win 8 laptop, I still utterly despise it. I have to sign up for an account at the MS store to get Solitaire? Really? I also am almost forced to sign up to the MS store to get the 8.1 update? Really? I have to go through contortions to run basic programs in a window? Really? I could go on, but why bother?Give me a break! Win 8 is the biggest POS since AOL, and it's no wonder PCs infested with it aren't selling, or that HP and others will force MS to let them sell Win 7 computers. As they say, you can put all the lipstick you want on a pig, but you still can't take it to the prom.

It's nice that HP offers such a choice because Windows 7 is a terrific OS. However, I'm sure Microsoft must be feeling a little butt-hurt upon hearing this. When a company creates a new OS and they claim it's better than the last version, I'm pretty certain they mean they want users to upgrade to the latest. But here you've got a company that's sort of telling users that they'd be better off downgrading. It couldn't sit too well with Microsoft.

When the best thing about your new product is that it increases demand for your old product, you might reconsider your strategy. Unless of course you are Microsoft, in which case you pay a zillion shills to go around insulting people that express disdain for your lousy new product.

The Problem is After going from windows 3..11 to now w7 (skip vista).... when I trying win8 on the new laptop it's hard like need to learn again (I don't like it)...I cannot do what i wanna do (do simple setting)...

I cannot understand why m$ go to his UI, I can only think this is trying to copy/fight android/ios and try to get part in mobile cake...

clearly they don't think of "old" desktop user like me (and lot's of other that like me)....
glad to hear some company like HP and other still provide win7 option.......

Windows 8 is not designed of business it slows productivity which was proven by one of the world ui experts, multiple windows open and viewable at once are needed in business windows 8 makes this impossible.

Choice? Real choice would be for the OS to be sold and priced completely
separately, instead of tying the OS to a system the way most companies do
atm, something which shouldn't be allowed. In the UK this practice was
supposed to be stopped a decade ago, but such moves faded away.

Ian.

Why the hell would you entirely change the way people use your OS after they've been used to the way it is for decades? Only a massive moron suffering from its own hubris would think they people will just go along with them just because they're Microsoft. They made the same arrogant mistakes with the Xbox One and had to recapitulate EVERYTHING they had planned for that console because of competition from the PS4. It's ironic that they now have to compete against their own product windows 7.

Nobody wants Windows 8. It is not a secret anymore. MS can't get to windows 9 fast enough now.
I think this statement is a bit incomplete, if not exaggerated. People may not want all of what Win8 has to offer, but they certainly want better than Win7.I switched to Win8.1 for gaming and haven't looked back. I hate the Start "screen", but then, I never have to use it (just right-click the start icon)The most annoying part is that IF I used a Start "app", there's no clear way to get out of it. Sure, Alt-tab and then closing with Task Manager works, but there's literally no built-in Exit or Close anywhere in nearly all of the apps. There's also a number of fairly useless default services enabled by default, but they don't seem to have a major impact on performance.Overall, I think EVERYONE wants the benefits of Win8.1 with the FEEL of Win7.Most of the "horrible" parts talked the web over about Win8/8.1 aren't even real: like "you can't launch to the desktop". Yes, you can. It's in the Start options. So, I think what we'll see next is a version of Win8.1 that gives the option of having a UI similar to Win7, but I don't think w/the Xbone and Win Phone having the Metro feel that that styling is going away any time soon.

Did anyone show the "UI expert" the desktop button?

Or maybe Alt-Tab (seriously, people, it's been there since like Win 95).

There's nothing functionally limiting about 8/8.1 in terms of window navigation; in fact there's a few more options than in Win7.

I don't see ANYthing in Windows 7 that allows multiple windows open and viewable at once in any fashion that is different from 8 or 8.1. This, again, is another example of the myths around Windows 8.

I think I'll make a Windows 8 intro tutorial for dummies and post on YouTube. Maybe that will help debunk some of this crap.

I have to agree with Nermal, especially in terms of navigation/UI: Linux, especially Ubuntu. Why?

1) 4 desktops which you can navigate using Ctrl-Alt-Arrow
2) Start menu similar to Win8 but drops your cursor in the search field at top - you can type ANYTHING and it will find the app for you and hitting enter will auto-open it (exa. "Chrome+enter", "terminal+enter").
3) It's very easy to navigate and it just works. No screwing around with drivers 95% of the time. No virus scan needed (seriously, not like the OSX myth).
4) Entirely open-source, no license crap, entirely customizeable, highly supported.
5) It even runs Steam, natively.

Sure, Linux isn't great for gaming, but it's great for everything else. Oh, yeah, and you can get ALL of your business/document editing software for free, in case you haven't already moved on to Google Drive for this.
