I have an HP G60-230US laptop.

I want to put a 2.5'' SSD where the HDD is now. Then, if possible, I would like to get ride of the optical drive and move the HDD to the optical bay.

Would I need any special equipment for this or is it one of those tasks that's do-able after watching a few video demos?

You'll need a caddy like this to convert the optical bay: http://www.qkyparts.com/hp-g60-230us-2nd-hdd-hard-drive-caddy.html

The rest is pretty self explanatory. Just get a regular SATA SSD and plug it right in where the old HDD was and move the other one over.

As far as moving the data is concerned, you'll probably want to use an SSD migration tool such as the one from Paragon to clone the data to the SSD if you want to migrate. Or if you're doing a fresh install you don't have to worry about that.
