HP keyboard does not work with Dell computer

I have a HP keyboard (M#5189) that I want to use with my new Dell Inspiron computer. I have already bought an adapter so it can be connected but when used the computer will not read it and instead says, 'keyboard failure'. I do not have the software for the keyboard nor know how to find it. I have tried everything I could think of including driver updates but nothing has worked. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

What kind of adaptor? USB? PS/2? How are you connecting the keyboard? If it's USB have you enabled USB support in the BIOS?

It's USB. My old keyboard is a ps/2 but the adapter I bought connects it successfully and it works (lights for the locks flashing to indicate connection) up to the point where my computer can tells me 'keyboard failure'. Yes, my USB support in the BIOS is enabled.

Plug it into a USB port and see if it works. The lights flashing is usually a good sign, but not necessarily an indication of whether or not the keyboard is working. I have a feeling your adapter isn't working.
