Hi,
I have a HP laptop with Intel Core i5 and an AMD graphic card. When I was using it recently it was very slow, took more than 15 mins to boot. So I made changes to startup using MSConfig and when it asked me about restart, I selected restart now.
It shut down and made a faint click sound after which it did not restart. I tried doing the steps given on HP Support page but nothing worked including removing the battery and pressing the power button to trying to start without the battery. When plugged in, none of the lights turn on, even the charger light.
Since the laptop was out of warranty, I got it checked with a local service center, who investigated and came back saying the display adapter or chip was not working and needs to be replaced. He said it would cost about 3500. The reason for it to not work was normal wear and tear and overheating. But since I wasnt using any video or gaming application, I feel that he's taking me for ride.
Please advice on what might have gone wrong it.

So it's pretty well dead as a door nail ? You don't need any video or game for a laptop to overheat and die. Dust and keeping it on soft surface can do it just as well. When something doesn't give any signs of life it's usually power regulator inside that goes first. You'll probably have to trust some repairman to fix it. It takes skill and equipment to work on them.
