Hi there,

I wonder, if anybody here could help me with a problem that I have
with my HP Laserjet 4000.

Usually the paper size in tray to should be detected autmatically once
the guides in the tray are positioned correctly.

Apparently this doesn't work anymore with my printer. It seems to
detect Legal paper size in the tray, although it's loaded with A4 and
the guides are set correctly.

Is this a printer problem? Or a tray problem? How can I troubleshoot
or even fix it?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance and best regards,
Tom

Sounds like it could be the tray.. pull out the paper tray and set it on its
left side (facing the front of the tray) .. You will see three white
"levers" .. If the printer is set to A4, all three levers should be in the
"up" position.. If you set it to legal, the top 2 levers will be down..

Also, look in the printer and make sure nothing is stuck inside where the
levers push on the metal clips.. try carefully cleaning behind the clips to
ensure they make good contact..

Hope this helps!

Hi Steve,

thank you loads for your reply! I had a close look at the paper tray
yesterday night. It seems like the levers are working perfectly ok. I
changed the paper guides and the levers position got corrected
automatically. When set to A4 both levers were in the up position.

So, the problem seems to sit in the printer itself. What I did is that
I tried to push the upper two metal clips down manually when no paper
tray was installed. Additionally I held the "no paper left"-lever up.
Doing this and printing a document, I got just the same error...

So you might be right with your thought that its a contact problem
with thos metal clips. Do you have any hint on how to remove those
clips to clean them? Do I have to remove the bottom metal plate and
then "unclip" the black plastic part where the clips are located?!

Once again, any help is greatly appreciated!

Best regards,
Tom
