So I have a HP Omen 17 (HP 17-cb1521na) and I need to upgrade its ram. Since crucial says it supports up to 64gb i figured id go with that - yes i know its alot but if you saw my set up you'd understand.

The issue i have is that crucial is my usual go to place for ram upgrades and yet both they and amazon are sold out of the ram upgrades that crucial list as compatible so I wanted to check if you guys would think this would be suitable as a second opinion?

Crucial Ballistix BL2K32G32C16S4B 3200mhz DDR4

Cruical does say that my laptop is only compatible with 2600mhz for some reason however when i bought this brand new it came with 2X8GB samsung DDR4 @3200 MHz so i am assuming that others of the same speed would be ok too?

Any and all info/suggestions you can give me would be great! Thanks alot in advance!

Hey there,

Whilst the DIMMs that came with your laptop may be rated for 3200mhz, I'm pretty sure they will only run at a max of 2933mhz for your CPU, unless that spec Omen allows mem OC'ing. (Sadly my Omen does not :( ) You can check this with CPUz by looking at the 'Memory' and 'SPD' tabs. If you post a screenshot we can tell straight away what speed the ram is running at. The reason I'm saying this is because it may be slightly cheaper to get 2933mhz ram than 3200mhz.

Also, laptops are much more forgiving in terms of ram. You can mix ram, and most of the time it will still work. If for example you got 2933mhz DIMMs, and your system runs at that speed (3200mhz @2933mhz) the higher specced ram will run at the lowest common...

In terms of 'will all 3200mhz DIMMS run at rated speed' or maybe at default 2933mhz for your CPU, that depends on the fall back Jedec settings. Some will only have a back up of 2666mhz (I think you must be mistaken about 2600mhz) You can see this on the 'SPD' tab too.

IMO, I'd just go for a similar CL and speed rating as you currently have, and be done with it.

Hey there!

Thanks for your reply! I think the main issue I am currently having is that I am struggling to find stock of anything with similar stats so Im looking a bit further afield thus why I was looking into the ram I mentioned as it was actually in stock. Most other "compatible" RAM cards for this laptop are currently out of stock on crucial and on amazon.

I'll post the SS you asked for below so you can be sure of the stats...

Next Ill Show the memory tab

and Ill follow that up with the SPD tab...

Now in terms of your suggestion of getting something with the same stats, Id be happy to consider something if you think it would work at full speed and its in stock somewhere but I am hoping to get an improved CL at least regardless of what type of speed I go with.

Does all your previous assumptions hold true now you have seen the stats?

Crucial is showing 2 ram kits 2x32GB@3200 for that machine.
Both are available.

Hi bob,

Thanks for your reply! Im not sure if we have been looking at the same page?

Yes exactly... Im in the uk.

Its proving very hard to source components here atm as everywhere i look people are out of stock. Im not sure if its to do with the pandemic or brexit or something else but its really quite annoying.

I will keep looking anyway but the answer i already have from this conversation anyway has helped.

To be clear, I can essentially put any 3200mhz card in my laptop as laptops generally handle ram quite well but it wont run faster than than the speed the board can handle which in this case is 2933mhz so its better although not essential that i get a card at that speed to save money. Thats what i understand so far.

My next question to everyone here would be aside from speed, is there a certain CL that some laptops cant handle or is it the case that if the speed is correct and the cards fit then the CL will be fine?

Thanks in advance guys

In your first post you ask if .....BL2K32G32C16S4B ....would work.
That's the ram that crucial shows will work.
If you have access to it get it......try it.
Check the return policy before you buy.
