This old computer I have came with a Core2Duo 1.8 dual core chip. I got a 2.8 for $4 on ebay and popped it in today. The computer powers on, but nothing happens on either of my monitors, one a DVI and one a VGA. The DVI fed one comes off the GPU, the VGA is straight off the MOBO. I've heard that some HPs MOBOs won't accept a new chip, but I at least expected the BIOS or something. What am I missing here?

Solution
That model supports:
•Core 2 Duo E6x00
•Core 2 Duo E4x00

An E6300 Core 2 Duo is 1.86 GHz.
A Pentium E6300 Wolfdale Dual-Core is 2.8GHz.
You say you bought a 2.8GHz one, so that's not a Core 2 Duo.

The PC you have doesn't support Intel Pentium Processor E6000 Series for Desktop - Wolfdale

The new chip I got is an E6300. Is that the issue?

I thought it was funny that it said Pentium on the chip, guess I didn't pay that close of attention. So there really isn't much of an upgrade available for my E4300 if the E6300 is only .06 Ghz faster? I'll put the other chip back in, thanks.
