Hello All,

I am also a victim to DV 2500 (6/8 screen issue). My notebook p/n is gn169av and I shall share my experiences abt this notebook

I bought this notebook in USA in 2007. It was working fine for 2 years and one fine day it started showing the 6 screen issue. Right from the beginning the notebook used to be very hot and I never mind that. I used to play lot of 3D games unaware of the GPU issue in this notebook.

When it started showing the 6 screen issue I thought it could be a driver issue and later from some of the HP threads found out about the design issue in this.

I opened up the notebook and to my surprise there was a big gap between the GPU and the cooler with a thermal pad inbetween. I created a heat sink made up of aluminium stacks and installed it between the GPU and cooler and things worked fine for 2 days. To test the cooling effeciency ( 🙂 I again opened up a 3D game and thats it the GPU hit 75 deg and the pc rebooted showing up the 6 screen issue once again !!

I also saw in some of the threads that a reflow might solve the issue. I tried to do a reflow myself and ended up burinig the motherboard !! 🙂 Thats it the motherboard had gone bad and when tried to boot it used to give the VIDEO CONTROLLER FAILURE beep message !!

But you guys can think why am I doing these things myself !!.. Just a brief history..When the problem was seen I immediately contacted the HP support and after 3 are 4 sessions they agreed to repair the notebook !!.. The diagnostic cost it $213 and if the motherboard is faulty they would charge that seperately...A newbotherboard costs around $500 so spending ~$700 is not worth for this notebook !!..

Since I reside in Chennai, India I tried to contact the local HP care centre and they told the diagnostic cost is Rs 750 if the motherboard is faulty then it would be charged accordingly. I contacted a number of HP customer care centers and none of them were ready the give me the motherboard cost before going for a diagnosis. Only one guy told that the motherboard cost would be around Rs 20000 and after that I decided to take up the issue myself !!

Since HP supports extended warrenty till DV 2400 I also waited for somemore time to see whether they include this notebook too in extended warrenty

After doing all these research, there are only two options left.. Either throw this notebook and buy a new one or replace another motheboard !! I dont want to throw it away as it was just 2 yrs since I bought it !!. I searched in internet for this motherboard part number (448596-001) and I could see that there are lot of companies in china who offer this motherboard for a lower cost !!

I spoke with a rep. from a company in china and they offered me the motherboard for USD 105. Again this is a second hand board only and its upto the individuals to go for this option or not. Even if the notebook is given to the HP care centre the warrenty for the motherboard is given only for 45 days !!. So instead of spending ~ Rs 20000 (~425 USD) I thought of going for this option

I spent USD 105 + USD 36 (shipping) + USD 36 (Bank transfer charges) + USD 25 (Duty) :-(
Once I released the payment I received the board in 4 days and as I already knew the cooling problems with this notebook I took special care to install heat sinks (this time copper stacks) for CPU, GPU, Chipset and Memory Controllers. So with this arrangement the GPU does not cross 60 deg even while watching movies. Anyway I dont have any plans to play 3D games anymore in this notebook !!. Its nearly 2 months since i bought this board from China and so far I dont find any issue with this motherboard.

I have downgraded to Windows XP and installed Bios F2.E (latest version) and everything is working fine.

The reason for sharing my experiencs is, I really struggled a lot with this notebook !!..and if someone else is sruggling on what to do this article maybe useful on deciding what to do !!

If anyone is interested in this article and wish to buy a mother board from china, they can contact me in my email (cbevkn@gmail.com) and I shall give you the contact details. If one or more guys belonging to same location are planning to buy boards maybe you guys can club together so that you can reduce amounts on Shipping and Duty charges. If anyone wants some tips on cooling the notebook (internal cooling) I am ready to give you some tips on cooling.

Thanks and Regards

Hello everybody,
I have the same problem with my hp 2740 se - overheating , maybe we should try to find a lawyer and go to the court, then maybe we have our computers replaced.

Hello everyone i was having the same problem as all of you . i was having the six mirror screens . i have a dv2000 . After alot of research this is how i fixed the problem. i took the laptop apart i went and bought a heat gun or you can use a hairdryer and apply heat to the gpu i did that for about 30 seconds on high heat . I have to admit that after doing that my computer worked great for about a week and then i got the six mirror image again so i did it again a second time and after the second time my laptop has been working flawless its been about 3 months now and it still going.

IMPORTANT!!!!!!!! DONT FORGET TO USE A THERMAL PASTE. I USED ARTIC SILVER 5

I know it sounds crazy the idea of applying heat to the gpu, when thats the main reason its failing but trust me it works . here's the youtube video this is where i got the idea from

Hope it works for all of you

HP Pavilion DV2000 about 1-1/2 yrs old. Got the dreaded black screen last week, took it to Best Buy and was told the motherboard was fried. I'm very upset. HP offered to repair it for $398.00 plus tax!!!! I've noticed hundreds and hundreds of complaints on the internet about the same problem. It's time for a class action suit......anyone know if one has been filed yet???

I also have a DV2500 that runs unbelievably hot. I have burn marks on my knee! I would love to join a class action against them. I have not had the multiple graphics problem but this will not keep an internet connection and it takes forever to load a page on the internet..

Also having the same problem with multiple screens at boot.

HP Pavillion DV2500 bought in Porto, Portugal

Already tried using Ubuntu.. problem appears again after some days.

Gonna try the handryer in GPU with artic 5 thermic glue thing, worst than this its impossible.

I have the same crap dv2500 / dv2632TX s/n 2CE7392T6N (in Australia) and has been collecting dust since december 2008... it overheated and shut down on me one month past warranty... as i had not purchased extended warranty had to pay major money to be told i had purchased a dud... motherboard replacement was going to cost me $900AUD... paid just a bit more than that to buy it brand new... HP suck... would like to know if there is anything i can do with mine.

well this is my story.

I purchased a HP DV2000 mid 2007. The computer worked fine for 8 months until the hard drive died. So i told myself that's fine.. it is still under warranty. SO HP was more than happy to rectify the problem which took them 3 weeks to do so. So everything worked fine until my warranty expired. No joke, after 3 days of the warranty expiring, the LCD screen started to have these weird buzzing lines with green/pink background... so in other words, everything is distorted. I also noticed the excessive heat that after 15mins or so the PC would shut itself. The touchpad also stop working.

Now, I rang HP again to tell them what had happened only to find out that they won't be covering the repair under the warranty as it has already expired. and yes EVEN just after 3 days of expired warranty.

After so many phone calls with various managers (here in Sydney, Australia) they still wouldn't budge and have been advised that they will fix it but it will cost me.

So now this computer is collecting dust.

i think i might call them again and tell them about the internet.

I purchased a dv2500 about 2 years ago. My computer also gets insanely hot, but hasn't shut down because of it, yet. I can't even set it on my lap because of the heat even just minutes after booting it up.

I have other problems, though. If I touch the volume button below the screen, "volume" flashes for a good 5 minutes and I cannot do anything until it is done flashing. This happens all the time, but it only seems to work correctly whenever I take my computer to be fixed. Go figure.

Also, the touch pad is really poor. It usually works, but will randomly "freak out", move really slow with hardly any response, and then shoot across the street rapidly. After this process is over, it goes back to working completely fine. I have no idea what would be causing this to randomly happen.

Another thing is that the cursor will jump around while I'm typing (it has already done this multiple times while I've been typing this! It's awful.). I'll be typing a paragraph and the cursor will jump within a previous sentence, so I'll start typing within another sentence! It's really bad when it will highlight what I've been typing, resulting in me deleting everything I've been working on. I can't even use this computer to work on anything other than surfing the web.

I've taken it to Best Buy to be looked at since I have a warranty, and they said they can't find anything wrong with it. Unfortunately, there's a ton wrong with it. 🙁

I'm starting to think I'm just stuck with a piece of crap. I loved my past HP laptop (I had it for 6 years and it still works fine despite being a bit slow), but now I doubt I'll ever buy another HP computer after this one. It's complete junk.
