HP RAM compatability?

I apologise for my lack of knowledge but, my situation is that my laptop (HP pavilion g 56 - 130sa) screen just keeps going black like as though it's turned off but I can still hear the fan on it so I read somewhere that there's a problem with the ram? just wondering if I'd have to buy the exact same hp spare or if I could use one from my dad's laptop (toshiba satellite c660d - 181) or not? not even sure if this question makes sense but please help!

You can use any ram that is of the same specs (speed and so on) regardless of who it is from.

Sure it isnt a video issue or a backlight issue?

if it is DDR2 laptop RAM then any DDR2 laptop RAM will work
