Question HP Specter x360 boots from usb before bios

Hi, I have an HP Spectre 360 13" and I had one before that was 15" that had the same behavior.
I have a usb A plugged into the computer ( for my keyboard and mouse etc ). When I boot the machine with that usb plugged in, the machine hangs before bios menu is available. I turn it back off and unplug the usb and it boots fine. I have turned boot from usb off in bios, and somewhere else, but it seems this is happening before bios or at least before bios is accessible. I basically have to wait for the little keyboard icon on a black screen in the upper right to show before I can plug my usb back in. That little icon also indicates that you can access the bios menu at that time.
If I can clarify anything please let me know. Any help would be appreciated.

You might want to see what your current BIOS version for your HP mobile computing device is on. If you have any BIOS updates pending, please gradually work your way to the latest(moving forward from the version you're currently on). What OS are you working with?

I will do this. Just need a moment when I can reboot my machine ( working now ). I'm running ubuntu 21.10. I didn't want to mention that because whenever I do, especially at work, the assumption is always "well there's your problem! get a mac!"

I don't suppose there's any way to check the bios version/updates from within the os is there?
