I've used a number of HP PDA devices (though admittedly not SmartPhone - I bought an HTC for that) and liked them all. HP did seem to go through a big slump for quite a while, which I guess is why I bought the HTC Windows 6 phone.

For me the tighter Windows integration is important - I know it's not to everybody, and that many say the Windows phones are rubbish - but it's important to me.

Windows Phone 7 looks very impressive so far (unfortunately at a distance, not hands on). Having liked HP PDA's in the past I would have looked forward to an HP Windows Phone 7 device, and quite likely would have bought one.

They were right, it is rubbish. So are most the current phones too. I had a get different apps for android to do a lot of stuff I would've hoped to be able to do out of the box with a smartphone. But the apps are there though and pretty good at what they do: ftp server, file manager, wifi hotspot.

I haven't had the opportunity to use an iphone so I couldn't tell much about it.

I used an ipaq for a while and I thought they were horrid mostly because of windows CE. The hardware was not BAD design as far as ease of use, except maybe for hard resets which were awkward to do and were required on a fairly regular basis.

I can already see the innovative angle that windows phone 7 could go for; just can't imagine competition would lag behind much; especially not apple.

The apps eco-sphere is going to be the deciding factor.

Apple started it first, Android was just 1 year behind, and other big-shots like Samsung, Intel, Nokia played catch-up later. Even Android hasn't caught up with the Apple App Store after about 3 years, and the market is already starting to be crowded. The rest of them are going to have to innovate like crazy to even get a reasonable slice.

If they don't think out of the box, I'm afraid HP will be smothered in the box. I hope Palm + HP has enough brains for that kind of stuff.

let's see what WebOS can do. it's always good for us consumers to have another
option to choose from. don't count off a determined competitor, especially one
willing to put in huge resources on something.

lol palm OS over android, sorry HP but you will not be selling your tablets or phones, ah heck all software out there, this nis one of the dumbest ideas they have had, and believe me they have had some

It makes sense, but their success is going to depend on what what side of HP this product is on, how good the app store is and marketing.

If it built and supported like their corporate products (think Z600 workstations, servers) they could get it right. Using a corporate mindset and making something slim, simple, classy and rugged as the original Molorola RAZR would go a long way to expressing quality.

But if its put together like their flaky, flimsy consumer stuff (stuff you see in BB,FS,Staples, etc. think pavilion line) they are doomed.

I think its a smart move, they bought palm, might as well use the IP. WebOS is a very nice operating system, very uncluttered and efficient, i agree that is everything android is trying to be, and everything iphone owners think thier phone is. if only palm hadn't released thier odd comercials with some pale dancer that were confusing at best... i hope hp cleaned out the whole palm marketing dept because the slow adoption of WebOS was lack of publicity and terrible advertising in the first place... both things hp on the other end of the coin does quite well

That's actually great news. I'd much rather for HP to focus on perfecting WebOS and let HTC/Motorola/Samsung do the competing on the Android platform. Focusing on webOS is nothing to be ashamed about.

Trying to convince my accounting department I need to a million dollars next year to spend with HP which doesn’t offer android tablets/phones and means will have to buy proprietary webOS tablets which are not supported by any of our software packages, is going to be a tough sell and require a lot of justification.

An easier sell would be, I need a million dollars next year to spend with Dell, so we can buy a lot of industry standard support hardware like notebooks, printers, phones, tablets running android or windows or linux. Accounting or any of our department managers, won’t even blink a that request.

HP needs a killer piece of hardware, emphasis on the quality over quantity aspect of the WebOS apps base, and emphasis on how responsive the Palm team is to community feedback.

HTC and Android shook things up with the Evo; HP and Palm need something to do the same.

I saw you at 3 am on the corner- you were wearing a leather jacket. When I said "hey, punk" I was only joking.

I wouldn't buy an HP phone anymore than I'd buy an HP desktop, so I don't care if they carry Android phones or not. This really comes down to HP executives not wanting to admit they made some dumb business decisions by purchasing Palm, so they're going to "stay the course", with an inferior product.

I worked for HP when Carly Fiorina was CEO, I've never seen a company so poorly managed from top-to-bottom, I expect that one day they'll eventually run themselves out of business altogether, and be acquired for pennies-on-the-dollar by someone else.

Not disappointed at all, we don't need yet another andriod phone. However, I don't think their choice of WebOS is a good one though...

Well if you are actually interested in buying from HP you might want to contact your software vendors and see if they have looked into webOS porting. The PDK has made it rather easy and for the time being HP isn't charging to become developers like Apple and Google so the only loss in exploring the idea is the time of whoever is assigned to it.

If the hp made a hp phone with WebOS, I' will buy it.Way??? because HTC with Android or windows sucks,Nokia and SE with Symbian sucks, Apple....is not for me,...sow why not to try a new solution??

Ya,who cares what HP does.I wouldn't own any of their products. Some times it takes a long time for a company to die.Just hurry up already!

With the history of HP + Windows, I can't see why they wouldn't make a tablet / phone at least. Even still, before they end up on another slump, they should test the waters like Dell and make all 3 on the same hardware just running a different OS. Shouldn't cost them too much more (though I don't know how it all works.) From a business perspective, they can still put focus on WebOS while not investing entirely in it (in the case it ends up like HD-DVD.)

HP doesn't need to produce Android or Windows Mobile/Phone/Etc devices when it has a competitor of it's own that was the main reason for a very large acquisition. I'm glad they are putting WebOS into focus because quite frankly I didn't think they had it in them to cut loose and run with their new prize OS.

it seems that HP lost something... they where the Pocket PC Kings, I still have my HUGE grey Scale Clam Shell, fired it up the other day that thing is built like a tank. but now have an Android Phone instead. I sure do miss the outlook integration
