HP Xw4600 graphics card install issues.

Hello,
I have a Quad core 2.66 GHZ Xw4600 workstation I am trying to convert to a gaming rig. I have upgraded the power supply to a quality 750W version.

I have successfully installed a ATI Radeon X1800 256 MB graphics card ( requires a 6 pin power lug )

The problem starts when I try to upgrade the graphics card. I have tried a NVida 650 and a Radeon 7770.

Both cards cause the machine not to boot, I get 6 beeps and a Red LED ( indicating graphics card issue according to HP ) no signal to display.

I have searched the web and find an elusive reference to needing outdated 1.06 BIOS drivers ( not available anywhere ) and an old post on here where someone had the same problem but did not find a solution.

I have a final option, to install one of the reccomended GPU's from HP - but they are expensive and low on performance, and I don't think they are supported by many modern games.

Does anyone know of a still available graphics card that works with this xw4600 machine and can play Crysis 2 or Mech warrior online at around 25fps ?

OK tried the BIOS, no joy.

Does anyone think it could be a PCI 3.0 vs 2.0 ? the HP comes with PCI-E 2.0 x16
Graphics card is PCI-E 3.0

From what I understand the PCI should be backwards compatible with PCI 2 but maybe is causes the motherboard to freak out ?


I also tried putting both cards in at the same time. The system boots, but using msinfo32 I do not see it present or using any resources on the system. The ATI Drivers do not recognise the card as present.

this is an old post but did you find out what the problem is im using the same computer and was going to get a gtx 650 but this kind of put me off a bit

Dear Sir/Madam,

I purchased a Video Card from Amazon MSI R9 390X Gaming Card when I mounted the card into my work station, I hear some RED beeping in the front panel of my work station and my PC does not start. Please help me on this. For your information, I inserted the card into the PCI x16 Slot. Please help me on this.
