[SOLVED] HP Z400 24GB Ram (6DIMM)

Hey guys! I have a Z400 with a x5690, RX 580, Win 10, and 24gb Ram (4x6DIMM). The issue that I am having is that my system is only detecting 16gb of the ram that's installed. On boot the system gives me post codes 204 - memory module failed and user rank disabled, 203 - memory module failed self-test and failed rank was disabled. Those codes were listed for DIMM 5 & 6. When I go into the bios it shows 24gb but in brackets 16gb and and the bottom of the it shows error on DIMM 5 & 6. On boot into windows it shows 24gb but only 16gb usable. The ram has been reseated and moved around, all the sticks work just not the last 2 DIMM's on the board. I updated my bios from 3.57 to 3.61 could it be possible that I installed an update for a 4 DIMM motherboard and that messed it up?

I don't believe there was ever a 4 DIMM z400. The CPU in that generation workstation was triple channel. So they all had 6 DIMMs.

I have the same problem... HP z400 with w3690 CPU (swapped from original) 24GB was fine before now dimms 5&6 fail with same codes as you.
I downloaded the Intel CPU diagnostic tool because I saw some posts saying the CPU memory controller might be bad, but the diagnostics passed. (Intel post said this tests memory controller)

I plan on moving ram around to see if i fried it but I doubt it. (I didn't touch it)
I also have a HP diagnostic I will try as well. (I tried this since original post and all passed)

Last thing I may try is swapping in the old CPU to see if this error goes away.

Did you resolve the issue?


BTW is have update the BIOS to latest a month ago (when everything was newly loaded)

ps... z400 Gen 1 had 4 dimms & Gen 2 has 6 dimms
