I bought two hp z400 and two z420 motherboards from three different sellers ALL were DOA!! I had the CPUs they came with and I bought my own CPU I bought dual core quad core and hexacore CPUs I swapped out the ram the cooling system the power supply and even the chassis and hard drive NOTHING works! I ended up buying a generic socket 2011 motherboard for my hexacore and a dell xps 435t motherboard for my hexacore. Has anyone else had a mass of DOAs with these boards?? Am I doing something obviously wrong that is not obvious to me somehow?

The boards are probably fine just a completly diffrent power layout.

Interesting thought but here's my problem I'm having. Let me know if you're answer changes. My psu is a Evga 500 watt atx psu.
On my z400s lights up doesn't power on

On my z420s

No lights (idk if it has any though) doesn't power on

Do you still think you're answer is unchanged?

Yes as this is the common problem with everyone on the internet trying to upgrade their z400 or z420 workstations.

Hmmm.

Same with z420 ?it won't even light up! Is is supposed to?is that the same issue or is that particular z420 just dead?

Depends it's not meant to work with a atx psu (standard psu) so chances are high it just isn't getting the current voltages and not working. Try to avoid getting oem motherboards in the future as they are usually nothing but trouble.

Then you were lucky. Hp and dell are the worst when buying parts from their computers I've had nothing but issues trying to repurpose parts of them (80% of the time at least).

Dang it! I just bought an xps board for my next rig too. I'm going generic intel socket 2011 board for my hexacore build!

Make sure you get the right 2011 socket version as they aren't backwards or forwards comaptible.

It's an e5-2650. That's the right socket type right?im not familiar with 2011s just 1151 1155 1366 am3 am3+ 939 and a few others amd and intel wise. Yes I know this is intel by the way.

The z420 and Xeon are both v1.i believe the generic is v1 also do you think I should get the generic socket 2011 board or get a hp psu for the z420?is the z420 board even able to be saved?

I wouldn't invest in those hp boards.

Noted.
generic I will go generic I will go hi-ho-the-merry-oh.......

At least it will be new not used!!:)
