hi so i have a HP Z420 workstation according to the HP site the max hdd size is 10tb but that got me thinking if thats a limit set by the oem/storage controller? or by windows I currently am not using it using endeavor OS (arch based linux distro) I was even thinking of RAIDING my 2 drives for a whopping 24tb is it possiable under linux to do this or is the llimit hard coded into the controller itself?

I don't see any indication of max HDD size on here
https://support.hp.com/au-en/document/c03277050
Is it possible 10tb is the biggest drive size they offer?

I don't think windows has a max hdd space size, beyond what GPT allows now. Meaning 18.8 million TB
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-gb/w...t-based-hard-drive-partitions?view=windows-10

I think its set by the controller on motherboard as the Z820 could access more
The Z420 and Z620 support up to 11TB of storage and the Z820 supports up to 14TB of storage.

The 12tb limit appears to be on SATA controller.
Storage

  • Internal Storage:

  • Up to 4 3.5-inch 7200 rpm SATA drives: 250, 500 GB, 1, 2, 3 TB, (12 TB max)
  • Up to 4 2.5-inch 10K rpm SAS drives: 300, 600, 900 GB, 1.2 TB (4.8 TB max)
  • Up to 4 3.5-inch 15K rpm SAS drives: 300, 450, 600 GB (2.4 TB max)
  • Up to 4 2.5-inch SATA solid state drives: 128, 180, 240, 256, 480, 512 GB (2 TB max)
  • Up to 1 2.5-inch SATA self-encrypting solid state boot drive (SED SSD): 256 GB
  • Up to 1 2.5-inch SATA self-encrypting hard drive (SED HDD): 1 TB max
  • Up to 1 PCIe SSD Fusion ioFX 410 GB
  • Up to 2 PCIe SSD HP Z Turbo Drives 256 GB, 512 GB (1 TB max)
https://www.itcreations.com/workstation-hp/hp-z420-workstation

the amount of limit seems to be a moving target, they show 12.

I assume you didn't get
Optional SAS controller: LSI 9217 -4i4e 8-port SAS/SATA 6 Gb/s, RAID 0, 1, 10 capable

As I don't see a limit on it - https://docs.broadcom.com/doc/12352067

I don't think you can hack it to give more access, it could be the actual hardware is different. The Z820 has two motherboards in it, as it comes with 512gb of ram.
