It depends. For speed you want a 7200RPM drive. I believe the Seagate SSHD 3.5" drives are 7200RPM and the laptop version is 5400RPM.

As far as standard HDDs you will typically want a 7200RPM drive for OS and APPS. The slower spinning 5400 or 5900RPM drives are usually for data storage or 24/7 NAS appliances were you may want want low power consumption and drive longevity.

Server hard drives can spin at 10,000 or 15,000 RPMs but are expensive.


I was referring to a hybrid hdd.
 
The Hybrid HDD or SSHD as Seagate labels them, are a good option if you need a single system drive with a decent amount of storage. If you are looking for a data only drive that won't require a higher level of performance... I tend to lean toward a traditional HDD. If this will be your boot drive with applications, you will see a good benefit.

As mentioned above a boot SSD and Data HDD is still the best option. However, I understand that sometimes that is not an option or preferred.

I actually used one of the first Seagate hybid drives in my PS3. It's a Momentus XT 500GB with a 4GB of SLC cache. I must say it performs very well.
 
I use a 1TB SSHD and it's been much better than my old standard HDD. I wanted faster speeds without buying an expensive SSD with only small capacity like 250GB. My SSHD has improved loading speeds a lot, I get into games much faster, and applications loads almost instantly. Good choice if you're after almost SSD speeds with high capacity and good price.
