Hyper 212 Evo or CPU defective?

Good morning,
A few days ago I posted this question:
http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2669185/thermal-paste-put.html

I assumed that I was putting thermal paste on the CPU incorrectly when installing the heat sink. The issue of really hot temps was solved when reseated the CPU and remounted the heat sink back to it. scout_03 helped me out with that. Then... I had to go mess with it by installing the second fan so it could lower my temps even further with push/pull but it actually caused higher temperatures. Now I'm not able to get the temps that I had when I first solved the issue! I've taken the motherboard out of the case, retightened the nuts on the back panel, reseated the CPU and remounted the heat sink multiple times.

I'm starting to wonder if the CPU or heat sink might be defective? I tighten the nuts/screws in a star pattern so that the heat sink is flush with the CPU. I've started applying thermal paste that is a size of a grain of rice in center of the CPU... Nothing seems to help. The heat sink pipes don't even get hot towards the top while running prime95 at 95 degrees celsius.

As a test, I turned off the CPU fan and ran prime95 for a minute and the top of the heat sink did get hot... I don't know if that would indicate anything? And running prime95 with the stock heat sink that comes with Intel Core i7 4790k causes Windows to blue screen.

My system specs:
+ Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced
+ Asus Maximus VII Hero
+ Intel Core i7 4790k 4.0ghz
+ Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO with 2 Cougar Fans
+ Corsair Vengeance 1600mhz 16gb RAM (2x8gb dual channel)
+ Samsung 850 EVO SSD
+ Corsair CX750m PSU
+ EVGA 970 GTX

Well push pull does work did you have it venting heat out of the case or in also I used a small pea size drop in the center of the cpu I don't think a rice grain size is enough never worked for me do you have other fans in the system pulling air in and removing it from either the top or the back of the case... Cable routing is a must to lower temps as well if you got a mess in the case this will hamper the air flow .. The 212 EVO is one of the best cheaper Heatsinks money can buy and I have used 3 of them on different systems before and never encounter a heat issue. What are your temps you know the Haswell does run a lot hotter then people like to admit.

My current temps range between 40 to 50 when idle, 80 to 90 when under stress from prime95, and 3D rendering causes it to reach around 95 to 100 degrees. This is boiling point. I had them down to 28-30 when idle, 50-60 when under stress and 70-75 when rendering 3D images but I wasn't satisfied for some reason. I've tried uping / lowering the amounts of thermal paste applied and I don't think my cable routing is too horrendous. I'll take some pictures of it tonight when I get home. Here's a quick sketch of my case fans. There are 7 fans including the PSU (facing downward), two on the heat sink and side door fan not sketched.

Could the issue be with the fan setup? I haven't touched it or made any configurations. I'm not sure of where the top fan and side fan blow.

Hmm... that is what I figured so I removed the fan that is blowing red in the sketch. I will take some pictures tonight. I may just take it back to Micro Center, swap out the CPU and heat sink with new ones, and get them to install the CPU / heat sink. The rest of the process is easy peezy lemon squeezy (this cable plugs here, that cable plugs there, etc). I just don't want to wait 3 or 4 days and/or pay a $149 dollars for them to do it.

Even if you removed the red fan your CPU fan is still blowing the wrong direction. The green CPU fan is going against the natural flow of air in your case.

Ohhh haha! I never thought about this. The green CPU blowing towards the DIMM slots is where everyone faces in it tutorials. I'll try facing it towards red CPU later. Thanks for noticing that... I believe this sketch diagrams the way my case fans blow anyway? It is a Cooler Master HAF 932 Advanced. I'm surprised my heat sink never gets hot.

Front and sides should be intake. Rear and top should exhaust. The CPU fan needs to blow towards an exhaust.

If your top fan is not blowing out, it needs to be.

Push / Pull setup on a EVO 212 isn't really necessary, but it is worth 1-2 degrees in my testing, so I run a push / pull on mine. As you've learned though the fans need to be flowing the same way, and towards an exhaust.

I found the directions in which the fans blow on my case.

What your saying is correct with the exception of the rear fan (it doesn't show which direction it blows in the image). I'd like to imagine it is exhausting hot air though.

So this is where I was going wrong. I've failed to understand the airflow of the case. This is my first build period and I've been a bit clumsy with it. I'm still learning and wish I could've done everything a little differently.

No problem we all make mistakes and we learn from it enjoy your system.

Both fans should blow in the same direction! Towards the exhaust fan in the rear of the case! Not opposite directions! One should be pulling air away from the radiator while the other is pushing air into the radiator. It isn't rocket science! That being said push-pull is a total waste with a tiny radiator such as the Hyper 212 EVO. It isn't big enough and the fins aren't dense enough for a second fan to do anything.

I haven't had time to visit Micro Center yet. I might take this heat sink back and swap it out for say a Corsair Liquid Radiator or something. They seem easier to install (well at the least the pre-filled ones do anyway). Or to just think about it I may just take my whole system to Micro Center to have them build it. I'm sloppy with cable management (I can't figure out where to put my bread-ties 🙁) and I'm kind of afraid that I'm putting to much force on the hardware when handling it (constantly uninstalling/reinstalling my components trying to figure this heat sink out).

Sorry for bumping but I've researched the interwebs and found that many people who have the same case as mine have their heat sinks facing in the same orientation as mine (cpu fan away from exhaust)? I'm going to make it face towards the exhaust on my next try but I'm swapping out the heat sink and CPU first before to eliminate any possibility of defects.

The fan is in the correct place.
The key thing is...which way is it blowing? The default is blowing through the fins towards the back.

That is exactly how I have mine.

So I swapped it out and got a new CPU Intel Core i7 4790k 4.0ghz and purchased a liquid cooler instead. The sales team who walk the floor said that the Corsair H80i GT is much more easier to install than the Hyper 212 Evo and thermal paste is already pre-applied which would get me to some better overclock speeds than the Hyper 212 Evo so I just went with it. I'm still scared to death trying to install this properly.
