Hyper-X CL2 Memory, BIOS says different

Hi Guys

My CL2 Memory shows up as CL3 on my boot screen. The memory is Kingston Hyper-X PC3200 DDR400 Ultra Low Latency Dual Channel Kit (2 x 1GB) - KHX3200ULK2/2G. System boot says: DDR 400 CL: 3 ,1T Dual Channel, 128bit.

The 'timings' are '2-2-2-5-1'. I'm not sure if it's safe to over-ride BIOS DRAM settings to the above timings but if it is then someone please help me translate those numbers so that I know which DRAM setting should be set to what.

Available options are:

* DRAM Clock
* CAS Latency Time
* Row Cycle Time
* Row Refresh Cycle Time
* Min RAS# Active Time
* RAS# to CAS# Delay
* RAS# Precharge Time
* RAS# to RAS# Delay
* Write Recovery Time
* Write to Read Delay
* Read to Write Delay
* DRAM Command Rate
* Bank Interleaving
* Burst Length
* MTRR mapping mode
* 32 bit Dram Memory Hole

Read that article and then force the RAM timings. It won't hurt anything. If your system fails to POST after making the changes, clear ur BIOS.

How to speed up your DDR Ram

Just set them manully in the BIOS. & use this as a guide.

Thanks for the suggestions. I decided to ask the manufacturer directly as to what values I should set them to.

Overclocking is tempting but I'd rather play it safe and stick to default values.

Well, according to the manufacturer I'm supposed to set tCL=2, tRCD=2, tRP=2, tRAS=5, Command Rate=1T.

I tried that and left everything else as 'AUTO' or whatever option it's already on and Windows crashes or gives a SHUTTING DOWN message around 20-30 seconds in.

I tried setting all to AUTO then changing each setting one at a time and booting up and found that tRCD=2 is what causes the problem.

For now I've set it to AUTO until one of you fellas advise me on what to do next.

Oh yeah, there's also two options that I can't set to AUTO:
Bank Interleaving: Enabled (Selected), Disabled
Burst Length: 8 Beats, 4 Beats (Selected), 2 Beats
MTRR mapping mode: Continuous (Selected), Discrete

Sounds like not enough RAM voltage. Try increasing it .10v. GL

I had set it to 2.70V as the manufacturer specified. Do I set it to 2.8V? (I'm a little scared to do so as I'm not sure whether it will fry my memory.)

I would try 2.8v. if you look at this pdf for your RAM, 2.6V + or - .2v.

So that means, it should be safe at 2.8v. Infact it may be okay a little

higher, but i doubt if going any higher would help....it might. This may

not work, as most 2GB kits will only do 2-3-2-5, not 2-2-2-5.

Tried it but system still crashes. I certainly hope the memory does run at 2-2-2-5 otherwise I wasted my time getting hold of it for nothing.

hey duds i was also looking at this particular ram

kingston KHX3200AK2/1G timings written on the website are: 2-3-2-6-1


This means that 2-3-2-6-1 are the lowest timings i can set in my bios?

Supposedly, yeah, although who knows what these sleazy companies are up to. They stated 2-2-2-5-1 on mine but my computer freezes on those settings and I have to run it at 2-2-3-5-1 and yet it's still not all that stable. It's only really stable if I set the tCL to 2 and leave everything else as AUTO.

do u use memtest , pcmark or sisandra or laod ur pc with some games to check for stability ?
