Hypothetical: Core i7 6 core VS Xeon 8 core for video editing

So at some point I will be building myself a workstation PC, and I'm getting an idea of what its going to cost. I was looking at potential CPUs, and I came across a Core i7 with 6 cores running at 3.4Ghz, and a Xeon with 8 cores running at 2.0Ghz. Im just wondering which would be more beneficial for video and 3D work, more cores, or a faster clock rate?

If it's the 2GHz Xeon, then the i7 is faster by far.

I would probably say the i7 over the Xeon, while the Xeon has 2 more processing cores, it is significantly slower in terms of clock speed (1.4GHz clock difference). The advantage the Xeon has is much more L3 cache and over 64GB of RAM. Not sure if having extra cache would help your application uses, but I doubt having more than 64GB of RAM would.

Nah I can't see ever needing more than 64GB of ram, nor the L3 cache being of any significant benefit. Plus the i7 is 400$ cheaper.
Perhaps I should wait and see what clock speeds the 8 core Haswell chips come in.

I recommend looking into getting TWO e5-2630v2 on a dual socket LGA2011. 6 cores, 2.6ghz base/3.1ghz turbo

You could get one to start and add the second later when you can afford to.

Oh yeah. I forgot Xeon's supported dual CPU's. I could probably afford 2 Xeon E3-1280 V2's that would give me 8 cores at 3.6Ghz...

Not really. They have locked multipliers so the only way to over clock them is through BCLK overclocking. Remember XEONs are made for servers not desktops.

You cannot put any 1xxx Xeon in a dual cpu setup. Only the 2xxx, 4xxx, and 8xxx Xeons support multiple cpus. The first number indicates how many cpus can work at one time.

No you cannot overclock Xeons.


The e5-2630v2 is a particularly good value when paired up. You can get two of them for $1200ish. That beats any single cpu in that price range.
