You could do it the hard way and just shatter every console and PC you have so that it is physically impossible to play them anymore. You could also break all of your fingers so that you can't use a control or keyboard. I don't usually suggest those methods, but the choice is yours.

Seriously though, you could probably just have a friend hide one of your PC parts or keyboard or something for a week or so so that you can't play it. Otherwise, just find something to do like go outside, play sports, watch tv. If you aren't bored, you won't feel the need to play games.

Find a hobby, soldering electronics / stereo tinkering. Power tools / wood-working. Join a gym. Start canoeing / swimming. Join a club (not a klan /cell ). Go to a library.

You can't quit cold turkey easily, say to yourself. 1/2 hour of gaming means I need to do 1/2 of 'X'. (Where 'X' is one of the above - take a course---MATH!)

Seriously though, if the addiction is impacting your quality of life (loss of job / significant other / friends) then it's time to talk to a healthcare professional. (We don't hesitate to take our cars to a mechanic when they're not running right.)

Solution

Except that in many cases help is needed, and making people feel like they "shouldn't" need help potentially increases the stigma around help-seeking which is literally the least helpful thing anyone can do.

Like alcohol, gambling and food, many people enjoy gaming. For some however, things get to a point where they're no longer in control and that thing starts taking over and affecting their lives. For sure they should try different ways of limiting things and there are a bunch of good suggestions in this thread. But if those things aren't enough, then seeking help is super important.
