heya,

i mostly use my ps3 for gaming, which annoyingly uses blu ray...now as much as i like the idea of blu ray and i have read alot about scratches compared to dvd. i am very careful with my discs and i was looking through them the other day and noticed one or 2 light scratches on a few of them...im assuming they are light because i could only see them at certain light angles and not directly on. now the reason i get so worried about this is because people tell me that once a blu ray gets scratched its pretty much screwed... i know all about the protective coating but as good as this is how durable are they once they are scratched? can they still withstand a few scratches?

thanks

They are just like a DVD or CD. Light scratches simply happen from handling them and inserting them into your device. When you start stretching deep enough to cause issues with the laser reading the disk, that is when it causes an issue. Usually that does not happen unless it comes in contact with a sharp/pointed object. If you store them in their proper case or in case designed for disks they should be good for a lifetime. People get in trouble when they let them lay around unprotected or put them in cases that do not keep the surface away from contact or on a soft antistatic fabric, like is used in soft sleeve cases.

The only time I ever had issues with scrathes is when I did not know any better and stored CDs in the insert part of a soft CD case and it was against plastic. After a few years in my car the plastic against the disk cause the entire disk to haze and not even a Disk Doctor could remove the scratches. Another thing is do not let children put disks back into the center snap cases. I've noticed this with disk games that kids use. They are in a hurry and scratch the surface with the center hold clasps when it is not lined up. I know parents that get the soft cases just for that reason.

have heard some people say they have repaired scratched blu ray discs using this companies products--though have never tried it myself

i always make images of all my discs saved on a large external hard drive as the grand kids are the major offenders when it comes to scratching them

good question--its a bit subjective i guess

i guess i would treat it as a light scratch to begin with and if that didnt fix it then i would treat it as a deep one

dont know about blu ray but with dvds i used to go to my local video rental store and get them to fix them on their machine--only cost about £3

most video rental stores have a polishing machine--makes sense when you think how many discs will come back to them scratched--they wouldnt just bin them all otherwise they would be out of stock in a week

so maybe pop in and ask your local blockbuster or similar store if they can polish out scratches on blu ray when you are passing by one
