Some games i play (Doom3, quake4, oblivion) work, for the most part, just fine. I can run them at maximum settings and i'm a happy camper. However, for other games such as Far Cry, HL2, FEAR, I run them for a few seconds and i start getting these black, blocky lines and artifacts all over the screen. If i leave it running like this for too long, it freezes up, and eventually causes a system reboot. Here are my specs. This problem is most apparent when playing FEAR. The ingame temps for fear get up to the low 60's at most.

p4 3.2 ghz
2gb crucial ram
600w psu
eVGA 7800gt (with arctic cooling.)
Intel mobo

I have no clue why it is doing this!!! could i have a defective card? I believe i have all of the updated drivers i need. There's plenty of power for the gpu, and it's not overheating. Something is wrong. And like i said, i'm pretty damn sure i have all the latest drivers. I read about someone who had the same type problem, and he thought it had something to do with playing directx games vs. opengl. Is my card just a defect? or is there something else i can do? thank you all so much.

It would be nice to know what brand name PSU you are using. Not all PSU's are created equal. It would also help to know which Intel motherboard and whether or not you are overclocking. FEAR is one of the most demanding games ever so your system has to be stable with a good powersupply. As for your temps what does your video card temps look like?

I used to get large black spots and artifacts in Far Cry on high settings until I installed all the patches for the game. Now it plays fine. Sometimes older games like Far Cry won't recognize your newer graphics card until you install the updates.

ok i just installed some new nvidia drivers, but it didn't help. I ran Far Cry at high settings, and my gpu only got up to 49 C, but it still forced me to exit due to all the artifacts and such.

I am having the same issues with my card. I have RMA'd it twice already, first card artifacting, 2nd DOA and third artifacting but not as bad. I am currently underclocking it and it seems to be running but that is not what I paid for but for the moment there is little I can do.
