I am unable to see the computers on the network that my router is connected to

I live in an apartment that supplies internet through a single Ethernet port in each room. While directly connecting to the port from my desktop, I am able to see all of the other individual devices connected around me. However, when plug my router into the port and plug my desktop into that, I am no longer able to see any of the devices on the network other than the ones connected directly to my router. I am trying to setup a plex server that can be used in all of the rooms but since my roommates all have desktops and I still need a router for my mobile devices, I can't seem to find a solid solution. Does anyone have an idea of what I could do restore access to the devices on the network my router is connected to?
