Getting 60fps on the MHW demo (granted is a silly test), 120 in cyberpunk without RT and around 90 in RE4 with RT. I was told I could reach 120 easily in any game but the bechmark for Monster Hunter Wilds gave me 80 fps at best. Metro Exodus has like 70 and FF7 Rebirth has 120 and no stuttering but it has a real ugly ghosting, same with FSR, that thing makes every game ugly but it will give me 120-140 fps.

I've been reading nvidia cards have DLSS4 and makes the game look prettier while giving you an FPS boost, I've seen a hardware nexus for KCD2 and at 1440p every 4070 series performs much better than the 7900xt.

Am I stupid or the '1440p' cards are like this?

I guess "ultra presets" are for RT, silly stupid reflections and 4080/4090 series, top tier, etc.

I'm quite lost, I don't like nvidia practices but reading about DLSS4 is making me think I'm not a smart consumer.

Nvidia has better performance in RT. DLSS is a band aid to make headline frame rates.

The 7900xt gives really good raster frame rates. I bought mine fully aware that RT will make it struggle.
It all depends on how you want to use the card.

For me RT is a nice thing but I would never sacrifice FPS in exchange of RT. I don't really care about RT but DLSS and frame generation seems to be better in Nvidia.

I'm also quite new to 'modern games' so I don't really know what to expect or what settings to prioritize.

Your expectations might be a bit high. No card is going to raster to satisfaction for price paid with some of these later AAA at ultra settings. This generation, apps are filling the FPS gap at a price. Personally, I wouldn't have (and didn't) bought something from previous generation right now because prices haven't moved down sufficiently, and the new cards got more bells and whistles. However, you got a really good card which should let you enjoy anything right now at great settings.

I agree with you with that but it was, literally, the only 1440 card available at a normal price! I got it on amazon and it was insane, everything was unavailable, crazy expensive or sold from 'odd' external sellers.

It’s not that the 7900xt can’t do rt it just can’t do it as well as nvidia so it will struggle a little in that regard but if you turn most of the rt down out of it should do well. Might even consider checking around March as new AMD cars are supposed to be arriving and supposedly they are working on having better rt performance and fsr 4 to combat dlss4. We’ll see how they perform but you may be able to sell the xt at that time not sure. Right now though seems like it’s hard to find almost any higher end cards of either generation from either company. For example try to find a7900xtx even. I got mine last month for 800. Now Microcenter is sold out and the cheapest I saw on Newegg yesterday they wanted $1500 or more.
