I can see my external hard drive in My Computer but can\'t open it

I plug in my WD 1TB external hard drive, the computer tells me it is connected through USB and power,(by the 'safe to remove icon),the tiny light on the HD flickers then remains static, but no sign of it in the 'my computer' file when I try to access its backup contents. The devise is almost new, and has suffered no trauma.

Does it show up in Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management?Disk Management? If it has no drive letter, it can't show in My Computer?

This is Sagar. I am currently facing problem similar to what its mentioned above. I will describe my problem more specifically:

I have Westen Digital Harddisk 1TB and trying to connect to my Wipro laptop (WinXp Professional SP2). It shows a drive has appeared. When I try to open it says "Need to format". I also changed its drive name to "M" after referring to random website's solution but all in vain. I can open this hard disk in on other PC's.

Can you please help as I have very important data in it & I don't want to lose it?
