Long story short: My internal WD black storage device will no longer fit. This specific device :

"WD Black 2TB AN1500 NVMe SSD Add-in-Card"

Can i pop it into a smaller pciex1 slot or do i need an external enclosure?

I'm using this board:

ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming AMD AM4

Any input is appreciated
Thanks

Or get a new motherboard with more PCIE x16 slots/more space between slots.
Some options (ASUS boards to better match your current one) :
ROG STRIX X570-E GAMING WIFI II
ROG Strix X570-E Gaming
ROG Strix X570-F Gaming
ROG STRIX B550-XE GAMING WIFI
ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING

OOF! I just bought this board. You do make a good point though.

I wouldn't think so, not even depth to handle the card thickness.

Snaking a riser cable under the card is the best option and mounting the NVMe card vertically might work.
There is no room to snake a riser cable behind the 4080. When I was installing the gpu I kept the riser in to see if it would clear it. NO CHANCE. I'd have to put a dangerous amount of pressure on the riser.

I do appreciate everyone's options and ideas. Thank you.

Just to mention it again. This nvme card is for video editing. I have an open type c port in the back and i'd sacrifice the cards speed for convenience..like a usb option or something.

Ideally i'd slot in another x16, though

X570 or B550

Just depends on the features you want.
I'm looking for a lower x16 slot or lots of I/O i use a ton of usb devices.
ASUS ROG Strix B550-A Gaming AMD AM4 (current board)
In my shopping adventures i saw that B570 boards have more I/O and some still have the 3rd x16 slot

I Found the GIGABYTE X570S AORUS ELITE AX that fit all the needed criteria.

Please elaborate.
I know it will drasticaly reduce the speed of my AN1500. But as I said if it's THAT bad I'll get a new board
Elaborate what?

PCIE slot width determines available bandwidth.
PCIE 3.0 x1 gives ~ 850MB/s read/write capability from theoretical maximum of your AN1500 (6500/4100 MB/s).

I have no idea on how much storage performance is of importance for you.

If it's for some work thing, then would probably eat the cost.
If it's just for gaming, then 800MB/s is plenty for most use cases.
I'm using it for editing video
Side note: I have 10 Tb of storage excluding this card. All solisd state
Also worth noting. While im editing footage it creates proxy footage on my local SSD
