Question I can't play minecraft 1.8 multiplayer anymore

so, i normally play 1.8 multiplayer and when i get bored i play on 1.14 single player. recently, after switching to 1.8, i found out i cant actually play on a multiplayer server. it would let me join and after a split second just kick me with the error "[proxy] lost connection to server" every single time on every single server i try. i don't know why that happens and have heard that having 2 different folders for 1.13+ and 1.8 would fix the issue, but i don't know how to do that. can somebody help?
