Is there anyway I can back everything up such as game saves for F.E.A.R. etc, my music, videos, everything, then reset it and upload everything again?? if so that would be awsome.

Generally yes, they are typically either in the game folder in program files, or under my documents.

BUT, if it is viral, it may not be worth the risk, anyone else have an opinion on that last bit?

Now that brings up another thought - what if the malware also resides in one of the programs or game files you save? Sounds like you should try to eliminate the problem first and then save everything you want before going to a fresh install. As you try to lacate and save everything you'll probably learn a lesson about housekeeping and efficient file management  .

G'Day McRid

I had a similar problem and it turned out to be a Trojan. NCIS or something I can't remember the name. Nothing could get rid of it Spybot, Adaware, Norton Anti Virus and a bunch of other stuff. After some research I found a tool called TrojanHunter and that did the trick.

It's got an eval period so you can give it a try; it might help.

Good luck.

Thanks for bringing up the TrojanHunter program you used, I knew I previously had a trojan on my machine Nortons AV found it but couldn't eliminate it so I eliminated NAV from my machine and went to F-Prot also found it but couldn't eliminate it, so I eliminated F-Prot.

Started using Avast AV and all this time its been telling me the machine was clean, installed TrojanHunter and it found 2 Trojans with disable keys imbedded in the registry which disabled the scanning programs, and TrojanHunter got rid of the problems.

TrojanHunter works!!!, now I have to decide whether to leave Avast on the machine that was giving a clean bill of health when the machine was really infected, but thats my problem and again Thanks! Ryan

Well that was interesting. Thanks. But you failed to actually mentioned what folding at home was....but save it. There are way too many annoying forum posts on the subject already. It's the TGH forum spam.

🙁 OK... getting tired of this. I just recently bought Battlefield 2142, I installed it.. its working fine, all is great, my rig is running it fine etc. The problem is, for some reason it keeps minimizing.. and it crashes it from time to time.. and it's minimizing for NO REASON, crashing the game completely so that it wont maximize again, and comes up with "Not Responding" and i lose all the points and everything else for that round...grrrr

I've updated all my drivers, ran every spyware ad-aware etc. they find a few things, then they are removed. I've looked at processes when i hit ctrl+alt+del and all that is taking up anything is the game, nothing else is running in the background. (sorry if this is all chopped up, im angry with this, so sorry in advanced) I have no idea wtf is wrong with it..... I've even reinstalled it, re-patched it... everything, please, somone, HELP :!: 🙁

One more thing to mention, it usually happens every 1-2 hours, when it does it happens 3-5 times in a row.. Sometimes there is a pop up, now ive ran EVERY type of adaware and spyware and spysweeper with updated files and everything, could it be a hidden file doing this? Because I really cant stand it much longer...

quick and easy fix. reformat the hd and start from scratch.

Thats is if Spyware or some Virus is actually your problem you may be going to do a reinstallation for nothing, and the files you backup to CD or whatever means you do it, you had better scan with some kind of virus protection or you may transfer the virus through those backed up files, right onto your fresh new install and be right back where you are now.

I would eliminate all possible hardware failure possibilities before I even considered a reinstall!

Folding@Home combines the power of thousands of CPUs in computers worldwide to simulate protein folding. This is very CPU-intensive stuff and even a few super computers wouldn't be enough. They need much more power, hence people install the program and run it when they are not using their computer, like at night We want to learn more about protein folding because when they "misfold" they can trigger such diseases as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

HPV man. Over 90 types! Natural toxins (from bacteria etc), anti-bodies, chemicals found in things like water, shampoo, and the air, pesticides used for our food, etc. God knows WTF causes diseases and cancer. You know some scientists say that being exposed to a virus when you're young can cause cancer when you're older? Crazy. And I knew everything but the protien thing. I just knew about the progs that we can partake in to help out. Yeah, at the current rate it'll take years and years.

Why would I say what folding@home was ? you already knew the answer to that ? Hmmm maybe you forgot....

Folding at home is not "cancer research" LOL It's human genome sequencing. They're trying to find the layout of the human genome and it's a large mathematical equation.

Ok before I would start from scratch lets look at some little things we may have missed. You said way back you were gonna check vid card temp's.I would run some intense graf. games to see if it maybe hardware or just disable it if you have onboard.Have you tried to drop res.,shadows, general video quallity. Also i would keep tabs on my ports try active ports.

active ports:

Could run search for files created when you installed game.Mabey find something funky there.
Maybe uninstall game.
On the note of my own ignorance i have done some dumb key bindings for games( ummm. windows key is not good for this 😳 ).
But hey these are all shots in the dark.I really really hate  having to do stuff over. goodluck

Before I say this, I just want you to know that I'm being nice and not flaming or anything like that.

Please try to learn a little more before you post stuff like this. Hang out, shoot the breeze, and pay attention. PC's are very complex machines. Lots of folks like this poor fella come here with real problems dealing with multithousand dollar investments.

Bad advice from a less experienced member of the community could do way more damage in the longrun than the original problem would ever do.

We have many professionals here that like to help out and teach others in our spare time. Some of us are engineers, scientists, IT admins, and the like. Some of us are hardcore gamers from the wayback. We've been in this game in some cases for decades and have almost literally seen it all when it comes to computing.

What would have happened if this guy was using his onboard video on say an older SiS board and followed your advice to disable the onboard video? Well, he would be stuck with a blank screen and nothing telling him what buttons to push to turn it back on. No way to get here to ask for help, and likely a bill for a few hundred bucks for the Geek Squad to come to his home and push F8 for him. See what I'm getting at?

So ya, I'm not attacking, flaming, yelling, cursing, or otherwise being a dick here.. . just trying to keep it simple.

Before you go through all this virus and spyware hell make sure your problem is not the program BF2142 itself. EA is notorious for releasing buggy software.

I had a very similar experience w/ BF2. The game was fine, one day I push 'ESC' and it froze, never working right again. It would always minmize and turn up as 'Not Responding' while using 50MB of system resources.

The first step is to do a clean installation of the game. Make sure you delete any game data and especially the files that reside in your 'My Documents' folder. <--- if any of your profile data in these files are corrupted, the game will not function correctly! (Deleting these and re-installing solved my problem). Delete the files and let the game re-download them from the EA server.

If your computer is not exhibiting other symptoms of virus/spyware in other programs and the scan's come up clean, trojans and viruses are probably NOT your problem.

Good luck getting it to work, I know how annoying it is.

I'll try reinstalling it now.

I got the program HijackThis ran it, and found alot of random stuff, but I was afraid to delete any of it cause there was a warning not to randomly delete anything.

Earlier this morning I had went on to see if running TrojanHunter had fixed it, it didnt :\ But, I saw at the top of that one popup i always get "Presented by OuterInfo" I had done a search on my computer for all files named OuterInfo or Outer Info and I found one and deleted it >.>; still nothing -.-;

I'm really close to reformating, or just living with it 🙁
Ill reinstall and update you guys on whats happening, thank you all for your suggestions! ^^

Sorry to change the subject but I'm curious before you had all these problems what was Battlefield 2142 like, is it any good, I started to pick it up the other day but went with the F.E.A.R., Extraction Point expansion pack instead.

Kinda looks something like Mechwarrior, is it?

No sir i am by no means an IT or even very smart. My wording even after
reading over and over to myself says to disable vid card if cappable of using onboard vid.
I would run some intense graf. games to see if it maybe hardware or just disable it if you have onboard.
Not to disable the onboard. However this may come across to other folks as the way you read it.If so I am sorry. At this point I am confused. Its easy to know I'm new  . But the reason ive been coming here is to learn so if you see me post an error let me no PLEASE.I'm i still missing something?

The game is great, which is why im so angry that it keeps minimizing on me, its better than the F.E.A.R. exp, unless you wanna finish that story up, but its alot like the first F.E.A.R.

It's not EXACTLY like mechwarrior, only thing thats the same is the "walkers" or more commonly known as mechs. The game is really fun, should get it 😛 my name on it is McRidill if u wanna add me if u get it.

Just wondering , Are you running IE or firefox ? My brother inlaw had the same thing[ and everyone else]. Had a lot of pop ups with IE, they would come up even when not on line. I would uninstall everything you can[ IE for a start] and shut off recovery. Restart, install firefox[ just in case you have to get online when IE is uninstalled] and a regcleaner[ a lot have free trials ] then run every scanner you can. remove anything that looks weird and set regcleaner to run on start up. If you do end up removing some needed file i found reinstalling SP2 will' SOMETIMES' add them back in the OS. You can reinstall IE if you like after. A lot of bugs live in the restore and IE files so if you remove the app they go with it. I run spybot, ad-aware, regmechanic and avg with firefox and I never have a pop up.
To test your vid and temps try atitools scan artifacts and prime95 at the same time with speedfan to monitor system. It really does sound like a software thing though. Sorry for no links.

Its a BF2 total conversion mod. It's the same game engine and gameplay with all new guns, models, maps, vehicles, etc.

Its got a bagillion unlocks to go for. I finally made petty officer 10 minutes ago. It's still kind of buggy, and the servers crash every now and again - but man is it ever fun. The new titan mode is the best.

Titan mode plays out for the most part just like normal battlefield, except instead of flags, youre capturing missile silos. Over time, the missles they shoot will bring down the forcefield around the enemy's titan - which is like a flying aircraft carrier 600 feet in the air. After the shield is down, you can either keep holding the silos and let the missiles pummel the titan to death, or you can go for the quicker kill by boarding the enemies titan and trying to blow the nuclear reactor that powers it.

There are battlewalkers in the game, and they are mean as hell. The driver controls the main machineguns and rocket lauchers, while a second player mans an AA turret on the top of the mech. The rub is that every vehicle has soft spots, so even the almighty mechs can be taken down by a well placed AV rocket to the hip joint. If you miss, though, you better say your prayers. That smoke trail leads right back to you.

I see alot of folks talking about "spyware" that comes with your game and how EA is going to rip off all your important info and come eat your babies and blah blah blah blah. Thats a load of crap. There is a secondary program that runs in the background as you're playing the game that downloads ads from EA. They stick em on blown up pop machines and billboards and such. So when you see a pepsi machine laying on the ground, it's really got the pepsi logo and all that on it. Tomorrow it may be a coke machine. Most of the time youre driving by at 90MPH evading rocket fire anyways, so you probably wont even notice.

So ya, if you like any of the battlefield series, this one is the best of the bunch. If you dont like BF2, then you won't like this.

I would say check your temps then test your memory.

Then look for a virus or software problem but try to eliminate the hardware first. 70% of the problems that I have had with my computer were hardware related and not software.

My wife got a crap load of spyware on her computer once and it didn't mess it up that bad you could still play games etc.

I used to get kicked to my desktop when playing COH and it was a bad memory module.
