I connected an 8 pin power plug into the 8 pin jumper of the hard drive and turned it on. Is the hard drive shot now?

Almost certainly. The jumper pins are not designed to carry any voltage directly from the PSU. Lord knows what you were thinking at the time.

You can test the drive (if it will still spin up, which is doubtful) with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic software. The links are here:

The jumpers are wired to ground and to the I/O pins of the drive's MCU (the largest chip). I expect that the MCU will now be dead, in which case the drive won't spin.

BTW, what kind of "8-pin power plug" are you referring to? A floppy power connector has 4 pins ...

it must be the floppy power then. it has the 4 pins but I thought it had another 4 on those bottom "slots"? bad move on my part, obviously.
