I deleted my firmware completely when I tried to flash my Liteon LTD-166s drive. Since that the BIOS doesnt find the drive anymore, so I cant flash it anymore. Does anyone know a possibility to flash my drive?

AMD Athlon XP 2700+
Epox 8rda+
Thermaltake Volcano 7+
2x256 MB PC2700
Creative GeForce 4 Ti 4800 (4600 Chip)
Chieftech Case
WD 80GB/8MB HDD
16x48 DVD-ROM
20x10x32 Burner

All is not lost, it IS possible to reflash the drive (hopefully).
You should be able to find info about this over on the http://www.cdrlabs.com forums.

It may require some fancy dos booting and drive plugging in though.

The only flash programs I know which can flash dead drives are mtkflash and mtkwinflash.

When I try to flash my drive w/ mtkflash 1.8, it says this: "ERR: Fail to Initial IDE port, please reboot PC". It cannot be a IDE-problem, because I also tried it using the other other channel. After that, I tried to check the other drive by typing "mtkflash 2 c", but this time it hang like in the previous versions.

In every other version (tried 1.62 an 1.55) mtkflash only hangs after showing "MTKFLASH by Joseph LIn, MTK 1998 (Ver 1.62)" and doesnt do anything anymore.

I also tried the mtkwinflash versions 1.5.3.5 and 1.5.3.6.

In mtkwinflash in version 1.5.3.5 sometimes it hangs when it shows "Initialize Device", and sometimes it says

Press Browse Load Bin/Hex & Flash
ERR: fail to identify the flash type!
Please wait a moment...
Complete! Please restart your computer.

and after that the BIOS still doesnt recognize the drive (I used firmware ds0b).

In version 1.5.3.6 I cannot flash anything, because all flash buttons are crayed out, even the one for the pwimary slave, where I have a still working CD-RW drive. It didnt even find a drive in ATAPI mode.

Once the flash w/ mtkflash surprisingly worked, and I flashed my drive w/ firmware ds14. The only thing, that changed after this is, that my HDD-LED is always on when the drive is connected, so the mobo knows, that there is something on that port, but it doesnt know what it is, so it assumes, that it is a HDD.

The only strange thing is, that after the reboot from the last flash attempt (mtkflash 1.8). the floppy-drive also stoped working and made a strange sound and vibrated (got Floppy Disk error in BIOS, had to chang halt on: all errors, but disk).

I originally had f/w ds08 on my drive.

Does anyone know adifferent flash program, that can be used to flash dead drives?

no... they are the only programs ive seen.
Regarding the hard drive light on issue, ive seen it too on one of my liteon drives, it was fixed by flashing to the latest firmware version.

I had a hunt around for you, and you might find this link useful: (If you hanv't seen it allready)

Edit: I found something there, that maybe could help, but I cannot do it today, because my floppy-drive also stopped working. I will change my floppy at the shop tomorrow and will try it after that.

I have now tried, what they recommended on the other site: I started my PC w/ the DVD-drive disconnected, and after the POST I connected my drive, but I got the IDE-error message w/ mtkflash again.

After that I tried to use wflash, a utilitly for LiteOn drives. I used the wflash filename.bin /ss /all command. It sayed this:

LiteOnIT CDRW flash Utility For DOS Ver 0.1
Try to recover the drive with ATAPISoftReset
Try to recover the drive with ATAPISoftReset
Try to recover the drive with ATAPISoftReset
Inquiry + ATAPISoftReset Fail

Program Terminated with error code: 16: BSY_DRG_HI

After this I tried to flash the secondary master w/ wflash filename.bin /sm /all. I dont have a drive on the secondary master, so I wanted to see, if the error would be the same, and the program reported exact the same.

Edit: mtkflash also reported the same error when I tried to flash the secondary slave as when I trie to flash the secondary master.
